Recently I've just been throwing my cash around on small tourneys since I have no time to concentrate on poker with college work.
Anyway, sometimes when I am bored I will throw in a weird bet around what I would normally bet (for example if the bb is t100, I will bet out t321 if I either have a good hand or just bluffing). After testing this theory a little more I have noticed that people call more if you bet 300 rather than 321. It's probably my imagination but is it possible that some people might think that if you took the energy to bet a random amount, you might have a better hand than if you bet an even, whole number?

Random Betting

I think its the chips that are displayed on the screen. I bet if you bet 349, you'd get even better results than 350. The screen shows a huge stack with different colors in it, usually indicates an All-in. Now while 99.9% of the players will obviouosly know you are not all-in, that shape and color pattern does trigger something in the brain that gives your bet a lot more weight to it.

That's what I was thinking. I'm surprised that not many people use this strategy. I noticed one guy doing it (who was absolutely terrible at poker) but people were folding to him (which he then showed his crap cards).
I tried a few times in a different game and it seemed like it was working. I notice with some poker sites the bet amounts aren't automatically displayed for you, it's sometimes an option you can select. A lot of poker players are completely computer illiterate so this option is mostly not selected, thus making them look at how giant your bet looks.

Seriously, I noticed the odd numbered bets but was more interested in the bets size compared to the pot size, his/my stack, re-raise and threat factor than to odd number of it. It may have some phycological effect but not much IMO.

Another psychological betting strategy is to bet enough to put the other guy under a nice round number. Example: if someone has 4325 in chips, I think some people would fold to a bet of 350 but call a bet of 300 to avoid falling below an even 4k. Its hard to tell how well this works, but I think in some cases it helps encourage them to lay down their cards.

Aesthetically those random numbers bother me. If someone bets 349, then either I'm folding or I'm raising - and making my raise a nice even number, like raising to 700 and not 698. If I only call, then my stack has that random "taint" to it and I feel I have to get rid of it.
Yes, I know I'm insane.

This is also a good way to make your betting patterns harder to read

i love to do this. once i get a bead on how someone would interpret this play, i like to throw out a completely random bet. in live no limit games ill just throw out some sort of big overbet and make a big deal of betting, and ill to it into a player who i know will talk himself into thinking im trying to bluff. obviously i do it with a strong hand. like the pot is $10 and if im first top 2 pair, i might bet like $13.75
mike carro advocates this. do something out of charecter, weird, and hope a player will misinterpret it and call. he says do it with a great hand so its a freeroll. such as shake your hands, put your hand over your mouth, and do it against a player who thinks hes really smart. it works.
