I knew I was in trouble when the turn came but thought I could put out a defensive bet and hope to spike a club on the river.

Against this player, I think you did fine. Normally, the turn Bet may be off (needs to be bigger?). But against this type of Loose and passive player. You need to value bet, not bluff, so the weaker bet ont he turn was fine, and then the check on the river was a good value move.
