Default tips for limit poker?

ok, so the thing is, im thinking of switching over to playing limit poker for a while. Just to see how it goes for me, and how much i'll be able to make. I've only played limit poker a few times, so im still really new at it. Since most of you guys on this forum play limit, i was wondering if any of you could give me some tips/rules of playing limit poker. Stuff like what to play, what not to play, etc. What hands i should be 3 betting with PF, what hands i should be capping with PF, how i should play pocket pairs 22-1010. What hands i should be capping with on the flop.

Im new to limit too so I'm curious what responses ppl give here too. The method I'm taking (it seems to be working) is to only play super premium hands (high pocket pairs, high connectors) to start. I tend to cap with AA, KK, QQ and AKs if I can. I'm slowly allowing myself to play a little looser as I'm getting a better feel for limit and the table I happen to be at.

I'm not sure if this is correct but I dump pocket pairs below 8's and only play 9s and 10s if I think I can get in for cheap, my reasoning being that limit reduces the implied odds of hitting a set.

Thats my 2cents, any thing more experienced ppl would add/change?

You are more likely to get paid off when you hit your set, since people will call to the river and give you 3.5 BB with a LOT of hands... and if there's another player along for the ride, you're pretty much golden.

I run about 20% vpip with 14% pfr... you don't need the high quality hands that you do in NL for the simple reason that limit is about taking down pots. KQ is going to be dominated sometimes... but it's going to win more then it's share, and that's all that matters. In NL the time you lose you lose a lot and you only win a little when it's good, so it's tough to play.

Cap a LOT of hands preflop and on the flop. Because of the nature of low limit games, there is a lot of dead money in the pot and going in with every bet... if you have good equity bet out both to protect it and to get the fish to donate money to the pot. Understand you'll win a lot less pots with your big hands because you can't protect them as much as in NL... but the extra dead money and the elimination of the getting stacked when you get drawn out on makes these hands still be profitable.

3-bet/cap pf with JJ-AA, AK. In situations you can also 3-bet with other pocket pairs or unpaired hands to isolate against a weak raiser (which I never do in NL... I don't attack people with weakness if they show strength, too risky). raise/3-bet the flop with most good top pair hands and better. When the bet size increases on the turn, if they're still raising, tend to believe them... but show strength on the flop to make sure that it's not just them thinking your weak.

Playing like a maniac may feel stupid... but it's a pretty effective tool. Ask the other players on here though... I still mostly play low limits.

this is excellent advice. and this is why limit is such a good game to learn the beauty of folding.

My suggestion is to only loosen up your starting hands (low pocket pairs and weak suited connected/gapper/double gappers) if you got at least 3 callers in front or expect at least 3 callers behind. --- I should listen to my own advice lol. I break this a lot lolz.

KQs and KQo can be played much harder as mentioned by someone earlier.

suited hands are seriously more valuable in limit than nl...

There's an NL saying that goes, "Better to do a bad fold, than a bad call."

Well in limit it's, "Better to do a bad call than a bad fold."

Just play TAG and you should do fine, they call like crazy so don't need to slowplay all that much. good to mix it up of course though.

Lastly. Expect to experience some crazy shit when playing limit. and I mean crrraaazzzzyyyy. The number of suckouts you'll get will increase sooo much compared to NL it's not even funny.

Cheers,

Mike
