Default STTs - More luck?

This might be a silly question, but do STTs inherently involve more luck than large MTTs? If to, do what extent would you guys loosen up in response?

Less chips, plus obviously less people at the table as the tournament progresses give you less chance to hit some hands.

I ask because I'm only approx breaking even at STTs. I'm finding that they either go one of two ways:

- I either take a big pot at the start of the tournament which gives me time to be picky about my battles. I'll rarely lose a tournament with an early double up.

- I get a few playable hands, try the standard pre-flop raise, miss the flop and have to throw it away to a few bets. I end up low stacked and as the blinds come up, I have start playing sub-premium hands and soon wipe out.

I'm doing much better at MTTs as before any skill comes into it, they simply give me a chance to only play +EV hands. Think I'll stick with them but wondered what you thought and which kind of tournies you guys usually play?

Thx!

Personally, I think MTT's, involve a more luck, if they have the same structure.

I too suck at STT's, and prefer MTT's. Your style of play can exploit one type or another, and they do require different strategies.

MTTs you have to double up some many more times to make the money that luck is a huge part of any single event.

STTs you usually only have to survive one all-in to make the money - if even that.

It honeslty depends on the structure, but yes they have less variance and luck in them as you chances of cashing each game in the 1 table ones are 1 in 9 or 1in 10 depending on site. This means that you are unlikely to go on huge downswings.

The more tables in a tournament the more luck and variance involved.

Well I think MTTs are the games where luck is more needed to take 1st place...

I looked at my stats in MTTs I did well lately, and each and every time, I caught a lot more AA KK QQ JJ and AK I should have. (I may had included 10 10 in that, dont remember)

On the other side, I finished 3rd in a SNG once without playing a sigle hand!!!! no kidding...

My PC went down before the STT starts, and I havent been able to log back before the end. And surprise!!! Took 3rd place!

Proves nothing, but tought it was funny...

Edit: BTW, I think luck is involve in MTTs, but just short term... best players win more at the end!

STT much less luck imo.
A. you are dealing with the same players the whole game, so you can exploit information that you have learned more than you would in MTT.
B. You rarely reach points in STT where you have to go all-in with an awful hand. (I think, @ least in my experiance).
C. You have more control over the tourny field, you arctions effect the whole field of players, unlike in MTT they only effct your own table.
D. you dont depend on winning coinflips as much. More flops are played as opposed to all in pre flops.
