I'm guessing a PF raise could have resulted in my avoiding this situation altogether. Perhaps a bigger bet on the flop as well? Suggestions?

I'm guessing a PF raise is the solution...

if you wanna cut the feild down you would have to bet 1.25 preflop.
I think raising to 1.25, calling the .25, and folding are all correct plays.I get more ass than a toilet seat. All shapes/colors/sizes.

3x the pot on the flop raise probably would have gotten him off the draw. If not, you were probably going this route anyway.

Save a dollar pre-flop - lose the pot post-flop! Hard lesson to learn!

Raise to 6 rather then 4 on the flop also... you're giving 3-1 odds, which are not enough to protect a single pair.
-You may not know this, but poker is a game of incomplete information.
