    Default cardplayer.com Bad Strategy??

Was reading the daily poker quiz on cardplayer.com today (it's pretty useful I find) but today I sort of disagree with what they wrote.

    Here it is:

    Question

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
A $10-$20 game. You open on - with a raise from early position. A middle player, the cutoff, and the big blind call. There is $85 in the pot and four players. The flop is: --, giving you an overpair and a backdoor flush-draw. The big blind checks. You bet. The middle player calls and the cutoff raises. The big blind folds. What do you do?

    Answer

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Call. With this board, there are a number of bad cards that can come off on the turn which hurt your hand. A ten, a nine, a seven, and a five are all bad, unless they include a diamond. Even with a diamond, you may be chasing instead of leading. If a blank comes on the turn you can bet. Just calling now does not obligate you to check on the turn.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

What do you guys think? Personally, I would re-raise the cut-off thinking he is either holding maybe QQ, JJ, TT or A7 giving him more outs

What do you guys think? Bad play to just call and give him a free card? or do you think the re-raise could trap you even worse? imo, worst case scenario is he is holding AA or a set, pushing all-in when he's holding these might make him rethink because you may have high flush draw or straight draw.

This is actually a limit game.

As for the advice. I would reraise. Having the is a pretty big factor here in terms of choosing your line. Since the board is very draw heavy, the turn card can really change the strength of your hand. With the , however, you aren't as scared of a diamond on the turn, so seeing the turn before deciding your strength of your hand is less important. With black Kings, I like calling better.

I would reraise too... you have the best hand and want to bet it for value.

I don't think the re-raise is a BAD play, but I can see the rationale offered in just calling as well...if for no other reason than it opens up a powerful check-raise after the turn better defines the hand.

That said, I probably re-raise here 80+ percent of the time.

You have to re-raise or check/fold the turn unimproved...

the strategy outlined is not uncommon, and is similar to what is preached by sklanskuth - although I believe they say raising is not really a mistake.

one thing about just calling, you may be able to check raise the turn, or get raised if you bet if you just call, if you 3-bet, you opponent probably won't raise you on the turn.

CO could very likely be raising the flop for a free card here. Check-raising the turn would be too risky, as there's no guarantee that CO will bet.

Why check-fold the turn unimproved? There's a great chance you have the best hand when the turn is a blank.
