I decided to make a small bet relative to the pot to induce some calls, but on reflection, I think that was a big mistake. I should have checked the turn with the nuts. Unless a set was out there (and there was no evidence of that), there was no card that could fall on the river which would cause me to lose the pot. Thus, this was a good hand to slowplay and see if one the remaining players might bet a second-best hand.
Does anyone disagree?

Check or Bet?
-
01-18-2006 #2
flop check prolly.
turn correct to bet. someone could have set or two pair. Q drops and hand with K wins.. unlikely but possible.
pot = about 1.5k so 500 is perfect. you gotta think the guy who raise your flop is gunna stay. that turn is an ugly card for most hands, so even if you check to the river, you will get little action.I get more ass than a toilet seat. All shapes/colors/sizes.

i probably slow down a little bit on the turn.. i probably bet about 300, or 1/4 potsize.. however, i still think u played it well

Hindsight being 20/20 I guess you could have slowplayed the nut str8 but a 1/3 bet isn't all that aggressive if anyone has two pair or a set. I think you played it well as it was.

I think a slow play might not be the greatest play here. The question is what hand could anyone possible catch that would get you paid? There's no hand anyone can catch that you can beat that will be crazy enough to bet, hence you are giving away people a free opportunity to beat you (for instance, a free shot at a Q or a two pair hand a free shot at a board) You might be able to catch a bluff if you slowplay, but I think you are more likely to have some fool call you with top pair or two pair thinking you might be bluffing than hoping someone will bet 2 pair or a hand like that on a 4 straight board. IMO.
I posted an article about slowplay 'theory' on my site (in my usual horrible run on style of writing) link in the sigNew Poker Strategy Site in the works

I don't like getting too tricky in SnGs, I think you played it fine.

Considering the SNG just started you probably didnt have much of a read on this guy, but considering MidleAgesMan was the raiser on the flop, I could see him betting the turn if checked to him.
