I also think the flop bet is too large and unnecessary
""Only thing I could see is the bet on the flop was very big (2x pot) and for him to call Id be very careful.
I personally would have bet 200-300 into the 400 pot and if he raised on the river after i chaecked I prob would have called.""
What he has there is a way ahead/way behind situation, the guy either has some hand with a 2 in it which seems unlikely (still possible), or 88, alternatively hero is at least a 90% favourite. In these sorts of situations it is not so important to be overbetting the pot in my opinion, half the pot to a full pot sized bet would be more than adequate, I would also follow up on the turn and river. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to suggest you can avoid going broke here, I think I lose my stack also.
