I started with a $15 on stars...Built it up to a little over $100 then started doing bonuses on other sites. I never touched a ring NL table. I don't play SnGs often either. I did it playing limit starting at the .02/.04 tables, moved up to .05/.1 when I hit $20, moved up to .25/.5 when I hit $75. It's not that difficult if you play like a rock.
There are plenty of threads on this site about bank roll requirements and the reasons some of our top people believe in those requirements. Obviously, it's the reasons your interested in. If they don't apply to you, then neither do the requirements. Before taking anybodies advice (because it's so diverse) I would do some research on how likely it is that a certain format is going to work for you.
It's been my experience that most new people (I did the same thing when I started) don't like limit, especially micro limits, for a variety of reasons. Can't take away pot odds, can't get people to fold, too many suckouts, too many people calling my bluff with crap, yada yada yada...I've found that those reasons aren't true. Limit is just a different game and takes different play then NL and in order to be sucessful at it (something I'm still working towards) it takes a slightly different style of play. I've found that limit is much more my game then NL, but it took a long time for me to figure it out...
Keep in mind that anybody, including myself, that gives you advice on what to play with your BR is gearing it towards the style they like to play, which may not be whats good for you. If somebody told me to invest $15 in $1 SnGs, I would probably lose $15...not all at once, but if I kept up playing them, it would be gone. I have a seriously -EV in tournaments because I suck at tournaments. Same goes for NL.
Does that mean I don't play them? Not really, I love playing NLHE tournaments and do occasionally. I usually will play after I've won a decent amount in the ring games as a reward to myself. I have no illusions, it's entertainment value when I do this. You have to find your own style and that may take some time. I started playing NL because that's what I saw on TV. I found that I suck at it, and switched to limit. Nice thing about limit is that if you are half way decent, and play within your BR, you can take some bad beats and it doesn't affect your pile. If you play NL outside your BR and take a couple Bad beats, you could be broke.
