The only way to get away from something like this is to have a solid read on your opponent. In normal circumstances, you follow though since X times out of Y you will win. Unless you can really feel sure your opponent would not act the way he is unless he has the nuts, then sure you're going to lose cash in these circumstances.

It's too bad you didn't just call the raise on the turn. If he continues on the river with a fourth club showing, then him having an A is much more likely.

And also, if he doesn't have the nut flush, then he has a Q or lower flush and he should be worried about an A. And the degree of his worry again depends on what kind of player he is.
