My thinking is I should've raised flop but I was thinking might have been out kicked or up against 2 pair so I wimped out. Was fairly early sitting at the table but a few were getting shown down with middle or even low pair here and there. What's correct play?

I would've raised the flop, especially with the blinds getting a nice free limp. What would you get outkicked by?? AK? probably not. KQ? If so, then you'd find out pretty quick and you can get out on the turn. Not to metion he only bet 40% of the pot

If you don't raise when your opponent bets, you're giving him a free card. Many players bet their draws, so it's important to get information and find out where they are.
Raise on the flop, but not just a min raise. I'd raise 2/3 of the pot (make sure to include your call of his bet in the pot before you calculate your raise). This should chase out any draws, and if he's still around then you're in trouble.
But, if he did call the raise on the flop, and you check/call the turn, when the river gets there you know there's only 2 hands left that beats you: KQ (better 2 pair) and 55 (set).

unsuited, I don't like it, it isn't strong enough to raise after a limper, and as you saw, it is scary to play post flop.

I don't think this hand is playable unless you are in late position with no callers in front of you. I raise this hand on the button when first in.
If you do limp in early with this (a very loose play), you are looking for two pair or a straight draw on the . Pairing you K or J is only going to get you into trouble.

I guess I gotta get tighter then, from what you guys are suggesting. I know it's not a great starting hand but I didin't think it was that bad here I appreciate the comments so far.

What I was saying is that AT isn't going to call a raise on the flop, so if your opponent does call, you know he's got either KQ or 55 on the river. If he does call your raise on the flop with AT and sucks out anyway, make sure to find out when he's around so that you can become good friends and take all his money later. LOL
