Seems I see many players throwing good money after bad in a tourny. Some seem to think cause you have a certain amoutn invested in a pot it is a good thing to go all in even if you feel your hand is beat. Also, many many players that go all in with a draw hand...ak,aq etc..etc preflop. Do most players today just have no clue to good poker sense or do they trult feel these are wise strategies? Has anyone else noticed this or take part in it?

Having watched some of the tournaments on stars, I can say there are times when raising all in is smarter then calling regardless of the hand. A good example was a hand I saw the other day...3 left in a SNG, SS called a min bet by 2nd large stack on the flop. The call left him with about 2bb. He was blinded into the hand, so he saw the flop for free (if I remember correctly).

In that case, he should have raised all in. He doesn't really have enough chips to concider folding at that point and if the person who orginally bet is bluffing, they may lay it down to the raise, especially if it's a check raise (which this would have been).

The reason I said he didn't have enough left to really concider folding is because with 2bb left in his stack, and 3 people left he's going to see 4 more hands before he's all in anyway. He either likes this hand enough to gamble with (and hopefully have some fold equity) or he needs to get away from it before calling a bet. In my opinion, he should have been all-in on the flop and forced the limper to call or fold.

I may mis-remember the hand, but you get the idea. You have to look at your stack, how many hands you're going to see before you're blinded all-in and what the odds are you're going to see a stronger hand then you do right now before being forced all in.

there was a time I would agree with that but as time goes by you start to see and learn from experince...how many times have you seen someone drop down to 200 in chips and come back and have 30.000 in no time. even if you have only 200.00 left dont throw good money after bad. In poker as the saying goes..all you need is one chip and a little luck. If you think your beat...FOLD

You have to look at the amount of money you have and the size of the blinds.

If you have 200$, and the blinds are only 20/10 you can still fold a few hands especially if there is 7 or more players left.

However, when the blinds are high if you have 2000 with 400/800 blinds you can't afford to fold your BB, you just cant.

In Cash games, this is quite common due to the notion of EV...you might be behind this time, but if you make the same move 200 times, you will make money in the long run.

However, it doesn't quite apply the same in a tournament, as you don't have the opportunity to rebuy and make back the money you may lose, regardless of your EV. Players may come from a cash game background, and be used to spending money in +EV situations, even though in this PARTICULAR situation they may be behind.

As for going all in with AK, AQ...inevitably you have to gamble in a tournament. Depending on stacks, blinds, dead money in pot, etc...there are times where I'd be happy to get all my money in with AK, and take my chances...because I might not get such a good opportunity later.

I think there's alot of people who watch the WPT and then play on-line thinking that the hands they see in that hour are the only ones that are played so that must be the way to play poker (especially at the lower limits and buy-ins). I also think there's alot of people who just like to gamble with any 2 cards (play anything suited, chase flushes, gut shots, etc. constantly) like they're pulling the lever in a slot machine. Which I guess isn't the worst thing in the world when they don't hit but on the other hand that's where the suck outs come into play. As far as calling all ins with drawing hands I think it happens quite a bit I I've had quite a few instances where I was in LP with AK and make 3-4x BB raise after a few limpers and someone fires back an all-in I fold or call and 2 other people call with crazy cards like a 10,8 or K,J and somewhere in there are just 2 suited cards hoping to hit a flush.

lol... AK is only a drawing hand if your opponent has a pair
-You may not know this, but poker is a game of incomplete information.
