    Default Bankroll vs limits

This was brought up in the "ace with low kicker" thread. How much money do you need in your bankroll to play No Limit Hold Em? In Limit I heard 100 Big Bets was solid and in No limit you needed 500x the Big Blind. I've been playing No Limit online with blinds of $.10/$.25 on a bankroll of approx $200. Thats 800x the BB. However, the swings in the game have been such that I've found myself making plays that are statistically incorrect to avoid taking big losses. Do I need a bigger bankroll? or (more appropriate since I can't really add a lot to my bank) should I play a lower limit? What does everyone think?

In limit 100 isnt even CLOSE to solid... 300 is about right

    200 is plenty for .10/.25.

also, if you're playing the game right, you should be able to build a bigger roll fairly easily at that level.

    Limit: AT LEAST 400 BB's

No Limit: AT LEAST 1,000 BB's

This is 10 buy in's for both and in No Limit, there's no reason to not buy in for the max allowed at the blind level. While at the table, never fall under 15 BB's in a limit game or 80 BB's in a no limit game. There's no reason to be all in in a limit game.

    Good thread, Bosox.

    I kinda disagree guys, sorta.

For limit, I like to play with 100bb's, but only when I'm intending on building my bank for a move to higher limits. When I hit my limit I plan on playing for a while, then I exapnd my bank to 300bb's.

Yes 100bb's is too small to never go broke. You will experience variance, but hopefully in the upwards direction.

I live and die by this, right now, I'm playing with bonus points only, waiting till friday's check to reload.

And I only buy in for 20 bb's in limit, never more, never less. 40 is too much I think Alex, but thats just personal opinion.

I feel bad for you, really, Im gonna love when you lose a mid-size pot then flop quads the next hand.

Oh, If I go low, I add-on/rebuy if I'm on a short. I just don't see any reason to buy-in for more than 20bb's if I'm not goign to commit more than 12 bb's per hand. I always try to play with a healthy stack. And NL, I always try to keep the max buy-in on the table.

And why would you love it?

    Because you'd learn a lesson.

Ok lets say you lose a 12 bb hand. The next hand before you have time to rebuy you flop the nuts and get it gets 4 bet every street poor you

    Hey,

Usually for limit, most players try to keep a BR at 300 BB. I like what Alex says about 400 BB... Bigger is always better when it comes to a bankroll .

For NL, 20 buyins is usually a safe bet. It never hurts to have more buyins. If you don't need the money, then keep a large roll, and withdraw only when it becomes really really large . I mean with a large roll, you almost never have to worry about going bust.

For those of you who read other forums/poker sites, you might've heard of the guy who went on a monster losing streak. Losing 19 buyins at NL 100 level, and 8 at the NL 50 level. This player had been destroying the tables for a long long time (with a great winrate), but has gone on this incredible downswing...

    Cheers,

    Mike
