so I was playing in my monthly home game and I had mucked my cards already....down to 2 guys. The guy who had position was clearly on a flush draw (these guys are sooo easy to read). Turn is checked down. Flush card hits on river. 1st to act checks, and the guy I had put on a draw checks also. So I figure my read was wrong. He turns over....................
AX suited for the nut flush on a non-paired board.
Now I normally keep my mouth shut and never give advice or comment on their play, but I found myself blurting out..........."why didn't you bet?"
He looked at me as if I was the biggest moron and told me that he was afraid that if he bet his opponenet would fold. I almost fell out of my chair laughing. He then proceeded to tell me "You play your way, I'll play mine". I think I'll take him up on his offer.
Needless to say I crush my home game.

today in a game a guy with a full house told me he was afraid to bet because he thought the other guy had a flush

When we invited this new guy to our home game, I flopped a full house and decided to see how he would react if I bet it rather than try to trap like I normally prefer when flopping the nuts. I made progressively bigger bets, crippling bets, on the flop, turn and river, and each time he called. When we flipped over, he had nothing, not even a pair. So we asked why he continued to call with nothing.
"It's called BLUFFING!" he said indignantly.
He's a much better player now.
EDIT: I mean, he didn't have a pair other than the board pair, and he also had no draws going.Last edited by MrEleganza; 11-14-2005 at 01:04 PM.

This strategy can save you a bet on the river if your opponent doesn't have the nuts.

Reminds me of an old poker joke:
A guy comes home after yet another night of cards, booze, and girls. As he starts walking up the stairs, he sees his wife waiting for him at the top with her tennis racket firmly gripped in one hand. Realizing that he's about to become her tennis ball, he whirls around and starts heading back out.
His wife then takes off after him, and she's making good progress given his drunken state. When it appears that he's never going to make it out of the house, the guy stops, turns around, and yells, "WAIT! DON'T HIT ME! I've got something to tell you!"
"What is it," his wife replies, tennis racket at the ready.
"I lost you in a hand of poker tonight!"
The wife is clearly stunned by the news and blurts out, "What? How'd you do you that?"
"Well," replied the guy, "It wasn't easy. I had to fold a Royal Flush!"

Online today, a guy played 5-6o from early position, flopped trip sixes, made his full house on the turn, and checked on every round of betting with 4 opponents. Not once in the hand was a bet put in. Whatever.
Like I should talk. Today I made a straight flush on the river, but only called a bet because I didn't realize it. Thought I lost when I saw his Q high flush show up and couldn't figure why the chips were moving toward me.

Well, if we're including the dumb stuff we ourselves have done, I got 89os on the button in my home game, and the board came up 8 9 10 rainbow. I didn't want anyone to draw out against my two pair, so I went allin. I got called by two (one had 10 A and the other KK). I smugly turned my two pair over, only to discover in horror that I had 78 in my pocket, not 89. (at least I had an up-and-down straight draw that I didn't realize I had, but turn/river did not come to my rescue.)

lol... i can't remember exactly what happened... but at showdown I announced my hand, my opponent says "that's good"...
Then he says "aren't you going to show it?" ... so I turn it over... except i had different cards then I thought I did. I've never been so embarrased in my life as I slid the chips back his way.-You may not know this, but poker is a game of incomplete information.
