i was trying to go for the slowplay on the flop.. and trap him on the turn/river with a check-raise.... but when the river card came up so did the possibilities of many hands beating me, i checked...

should i have just bet on the flop instead? or the turn? if so.. how much?

Looks pretty bad to me :P

Bet the flop, it might look like a continuation bet anyways.

The river check is fine, but I dislike the flop and turn checks.

Top Pair Top Kicker is still only one pair even if its the best possible pair. Since you were H2H and betting last, you should always bet out to a check even (or some would argue - especially) if you missed the flop. You can still "slowplay" a hand in NL Hold'em by 'underbetting' so instead of a 2/3 - full sized 'standard' pot size bet, just throw in a 1/3 - 1/2 size bet.

On the turn you have 3 to a str8 (8-9-J). Slow time is OVER! Any time the board presents a flush or str8 possibility to your one or two pair, you have to move in for the win asap! Pot size bet imo.
If it goes to the river, check it thru in this case (8-9-T-J) since there is a 4-str8/open-ended, on the board. Your opps is now playing you for a check-raise or has nothing and would/should fold even if you bet.
