Default When is pocket paint good to play with?

Assuming you are at a full 8-10 player table with average players...

I used to play Q5os often, I realize now this isn't a good hand. My question is when does a high card become good enough to see the flop? Q5os is no good probably, but is Q6os? Q7os? Q8os? At what point? For that matter, Q5os isnt good, but is Q5s?

I know its a general question, all I ask for is a general answer.

In general, discouting position and action...

    AK-AJ
    KQ
    +KJs, JTs, QJs, ATs

... you want to have TWO high cards... giving you the best chance to hit top pair, and when you do, to win with the best kicker.
-You may not know this, but poker is a game of incomplete information.

To give you an idea, I consider K9 a fold from any position. There are of course situations where you are forced to play more hands but in general you want JTs or better.

if im playing short handed (2-3 opponents) im fold Q6s on the button. even if its folded to me. full ring im folding KTs to any raise from any position. and maybe if its folded to me in the co or button i put in a 3.5bb raise. but imo, thaese are veary weak hands.

If nothing else playing tight will help minimize the money you'll loose by not throwing $ in the pot and hoping weak hands fall perfectly. Generally your wins will be maximized as well becase you'll usually have the stronger hand against people who will be playing any face card regardless of their kicker.

Yes these hands you are playing are very weak hands. If I have the chance to limp with suited connecters like 78s or even 67s at times depending on position and pot odds and such I will. Generally though as suggested before I wouldn't recommend playing starting hands that are any weaker than J10s, especially if you are a new player.

    This applies to NL tourneys:

First off, don't play unsuited hands like Q5, K7, J5. Ask yourself "what do I really want to see on the flop". If your only answer is 2 pair, fold.

Generally, from early position (EP) at an average table, I'll play: AA-88, KQ, AK-AJ, ATs, JTs. Of course I don't play them all the same way.

From Middle position, same hands, but now we get active with: A9s, A8s, KJ, QJs, 77-55, T9s, 98s.

    Late position start to play: A7s, A6s, QJo, 22, 33, 44, KT, QT, K9, J9s, T8s, 67s, 65s, 54s.

On the button, when the blinds are worth stealing, raise with any ace, king, Q8+, J9+. If the blinds are defending, only raise with any ace or K9+.

BB vs. SB: Same strategy as above on the button.

This is a total "default" mode, but should get you started.

    BTW,

I usually take "pocket paint" to mean KK, QQ, or JJ. "Facecards" means KQ, KJ, QJ.

The only words I can think of for Q5, etc, is "complete crap".

    LOL.
