    Default Putting opponents on tilt

Last night in a $10 PokerRoom SNG, there was this guy who right from the first hand was abusing people and calling names. He particularly focused on one guy 'BigLouie99' or something, calling him names and swearing (you can swear on PokerRoom). Most of his abuse was really quite bizarre. He kept saying 'BigLouie got big tits', and that he wanted to see them, and stuff like 'cmon big louie let me suck em'. Then some other moron got in on the act and started picking on BigLouie too, commentating on and coaching any hand he played, then abusing him if he lost it.

Well poor old BigLouie held on admirably, but no matter how hard he tried, soon began to get wound up. Before too long he tilted off all his chips and was the first to bust out.

But it got me thinking about something I read in Phil Gordon's book, where he and his mates went round calling themselves the Tiltboys, and purposely tried to put people on tilt. They would try and deliver some stunning bad beat, or win a hand with pocket 5's then shout 'presto', or be as irritating as possible, or feign drunkeness....you get the idea!

He even goes on to say there is such a thing as Implied Tilt Odds! So certain 'terrible' calls can become profitable if you deliver SUCH a bad beat it destroys your opponents faith in the natural order of the universe!

So it got me wondering if any PFOers have favourite cunning and clever (or should that be nasty and devious!) ways of driving an opponent mental, whether live or online, until they are salivating and throwing chips (or thumping the mouse), raising your nut hand all the way to the river with a wild gleam in their eyes.....

Yes. In SnG games, provided the opportunity presents itself, I have a tendancy to buy side pots off another player, if they create one of course, when a very short stacked player has gone all-in. Many people berate me for this, mostly because they are incapable of thinking outside the box, but my logic is that I'm reducing the stack size of the bigger threat while giving the fish some more chips to lose. Plus, the thing is that I will come out of the hand in one of two ways...
    a) I'll hopefully have either lost a tiny bit or won a tiny bit, thus not really affecting my chip position.
    b) I'll win the hand and improve my chip position.

It works wonders. Suddenly other players at the table think I suck, which gives me a slight edge, and the player who was ready to bust the small stack out of the game generally gets the shits and begins to throw their stack away. For best results, reply to the 'you idiot etc' comment with something like 'Well, it was the nice thing to do etc'.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I was under the impression that when 2 big stacks are up against an all in, the correct thing to do was check down to the river. This (or so I thought) was especially true in the bubble or already in the money. While not always true, 2 people have a better chance of busting somebody out then one and one less person is good right?

    I absolutely always do this.

Not only does it put other people on tilt it also keeps me amused and prevents me getting tempted to play non premium hands.

I have had some great success like people calling my all ins with 10 high on the river just because I said they are a faggot who has no balls and wouldn't call.

Another favourite is to fake tilt. If you get a bad beat and then next hand get some good cards you should absolutely berate the player, the whole table and curse how you never get any luck and then throw all your chips in. You will often get calls with mediocre hands!

Lol Tristan I knew you would have something!!

Yes Trons, I believe if a couple of you have a short stack all in, it is really bad play to start betting into a side pot. BUT.......

To put people on tilt you don't always play the right way! It's the whole point!

I actually saw a guy bet into a side pot, when all in against two others and a really short stack. The others folded, and side pot bettor ended up losing to the short stack, who tripled up. The whole table started berating him and especially the guys who folded to his side pot bets, one of them even said he would have busted the short stack. Instead of taking this golden opportunity to tilt most of the table, the poor guy got really defensive and started apologising for being a beginner, he'd only been playing a few weeks, etc. Everyone ended up feeling really sorry for him and helping him out, and explaining why he shouldn't have done it!!!

LOL! I like this one! Personally I'm a 'keep my mouth shut and let the cards do the talking' type of player, but I could be tempted to give this a try!

My favourite bit of table talk although it obviously wouldn't work with good players.

I was playing a live tournament and got to heads up as marginal chip leader. I was holding AJ and flopped AAJ.

I looked at the flop and then studied him, thought about it for a while and then said "well I suppose theres one way to find out if you've got the ace" and made an almost minimum bet. The guy said "yeah you will i'm all in".

Thank you very much - I called and he flipped over 9 10.

I think this is a valid strategy however I personally would never call someone a "faggot" just to put him on tilt. I think there should be at least some common respect towards other players at the table. Berating their play is fair game but resorting to schoolyard name calling? comon grow up a little bit.

In heads up matches when i sit down i started saying your goin down when i first sit down. Don't think it makes people go on tilt, but ive gone 6 out of 7 since i started saying it. I've always found that the best way to put someone on tilt is to put a bad beat on them.

I'm playing mostly on line and live play has been more with friends I'll on rare occasions try and "fake tilt" on line but when people at the table start trash talking on line whether it's with someone else or they try with me a simple click on "block chat" fixes everything.
