When I get tired of playing ring games, I will play a low buy-in tournament. While my tourney play isn't the greatest (by far) I believe (haven't really tracked it) that I make more then I lose and it's more a way to relax and/or reward myself for a good night at the tables.
I am always happy with finishing in the money, but I am also happy with my play if I can (in a 400+ player tourney) If I jst last long enough to get through a specific amount of the field (usually 75%). Should I be happy with these results or is that jst away to convince myself I'm not that big of a loser.
Right now I'm in a $3 MTT that started with 432, I'm ranked 16th with 200 players left. Still too early to start really bragging, but I'm happy that I'm doing well and more then half the pack is gone...

remember that the best tournament professionals make on average twice the buyin per tournament... meaning for a $100 tournament they expect to win an average of $200 a tournament... most players are below that, and are usually below breaking even.. if you have a positive ROI in tournaments, that is a good thing..

I'm a big tournament fan and have made 80% of my poker profit from them.
It's all about making the final table and really about the top 3. The payout structures are such that anything else is treading water.
Making the money is prettty straightforward in most as you only need to double up once and play supertight, but it will never make you da big bucks.
Don't be afraid to get knocked out in the first few minutes if the right chance to get your chips in presents itself, if you can get ahead of the average early you can pretty quickly get in a position where you can cruise to the final 5% which is where the game really starts.
As I have recently noted, sleeping through the early stages is also a viable strategy
