Default General question on smooth calling the turn

I was playing today at 6max 0.5/1 on Pokerstars, at a really good table alot of LAGs and sLPPs.

In several situations I was heads-up with these 2 different players who, were constantly check calling the turn and check raising the river. In 5 of these cases the players had either made their hand on the flop or turn, yet they didn't put the extra bets in till the river.

Now obviously in multi-way pots you want to keep people in for 1 BB and smooth calling is a good way of building the pot.

However, heads up I don't really see how this makes extra money....perhaps one extra bet. I didn't see the logic in it, except I eventually found out an online tell about when they were gonna do it and just checked the river.

Am I missing something, it didn't bother me, just wondering about if people do this and if so why?

What's your online tell? Mine is when the river is a 3rd flush card. You know then they are going for the check-raise.

Having been burned so often on the river I much prefer to check-raise on the turn so that river-chasers have to pay to play! Only if I am pretty sure I have the top hand - not necessarily the nutz - and am not risking a str8 or flush draw would I contemplate a smooth call on the turn - just to get that extra bet! This is Fancy Play Syndrome but it adds to the mix to keep opps unbalanced - although I use it sparingly.
