In Limit poker.
Something I have noticed upper level players do and later realized I have done this too but probably for different reasons I can't remember. Say you and 2-3 other people see a flop and your not on the button and you completely miss the flop or at best hit bottom pair. If at anytime it's checked to you you bet it regardless. Sometimes on the button you just check it instead since people realize you could be bluffing and will play back at you. Odds are they missed the flop too or didn't hit it for many outs and will fold right then. For all the times you will take the pot down right then and there vs. people calling or playing back at you seems to be worth it. What do you guys think?

As long as you think the flop missed everybody else too, I do this quite often.... its kinda read dependent though, If i got a calling station or two, then I dont feel its worth it.

Well depending on the exact pot size it only has to work around 1 in 3 times to be a +expected value play, so hence why people do it. A staple play in loose passive games, it works alot less in the high limit games you mention actually at least in limit poker. I do it all the time in late postion in the right game where people are loose preflop but will fold on the flop or turn to bets.

To add to this, it is better to attempt this if you raised pre-flop.
for example you have AK and there is a limper from EP, you raise and another player calls. The flop is J55 the first guy checks. assume both players are OK.
the first guy checked so it is likely he has nothing, the player behind you flat called a raise which in my experience is a pair of tens or lower or AQ type hand so he most likely missed to.Read my musings on poker and life at Online Poker Examiner, Poker Examiner, PokerNewsBoy.com, and My Poker Blog

Everybody already does that since there in the lead and will take a shot regardless especially on the button. The problem with that is what the flop brings and if you haven't raised then you could have anything. I get a better feel for what is going on when someone raised pre flop vs. what the board brings than not. It's not always an advantage when you raise pre flop assuming you have a premium hand since everyone will put you on one. Of course you need to change gears to confuse people too.

Yeah, I do this probably too much...it just works very, very often especially against tight passive players and again it is very read dependant. Though it loses alot of it's power if you didn't raise pre-flop. Be careful though if people see you doing this too often they will start check raising you, which can lead to difficult decisions.

True, you can't abuse anyone play you have too much or poeple will catch on. It does depend on the player too.

I've found that I can usually take down some small pots if I raise PF from LP if it's folded to me. When it's checked to me on the flop, I bet out. I will not bet out if there is a A or K on the board. Mainly because anybody who stayed is likely to have one of those cards and I'm probably not going to be able to shake them off their hand. It works often enough that I like to do it.

Read HOH Vol 1 & 2. This is all covered in great detail. If you have the lead in the betting PF, you should mostly lead out with a continuation bet if you are down to 1 or 2 players remaining against you. Against more than that this is not a wise play...........the odds that someone hit a hand they want to defend becomes to great with more than 1 or 2 players for this to be profitable.
