Ok... for the past half year I have been dominating the home games and tournaments I have been playing in. In cash games we play .10/.20 NLHE and NLO and I have been taking $50-75 consistently. In the tournaments I usually cash and I have won 4 out of the last 5. The tournaments are always NLHE and usually pay out $90-$200. There are a two of us who usually dominate these games and we aren't getting much action from these people anymore which is understandable. However they are starting to call us again but they have changed the games that they are playing. They're playing a lot of draw games with a lot of wilds which I think is to take more of the skill out of the games in order to beat me. They're playing Chicago Hi or Lo, 5-card draw two wilds, baseball, follow the bitches(Q's), 7-card no peek, and every now and again guts. I'm pretty good at Chicago and I am still winning in the other games but my winnings have been minimal. I hate going and playing these games for hours and leaving with the what I originally sat down with but I guess its better than losing. The stakes are so low that its hard to win a lot of money in these games for me, while it was very easy to win playing HE and O. I was wondering if there is any strategy to these games other than analyzing your hands and your opponents hands. Any help would be great. If I don't start making what I consider a reasonable profit for the time that I'm putting in playing I'll probably just try to find another game. This game was so soft and so sweet though I don't want to leave it.

Its tough
Its tough to analyze hands and opponents in a pure luck game, like any game with wilds, guts, or baseball. If its dealers choice the best way to make money is when its your turn pick your forte, hold em, omaha or stud with no wilds. Don't play the luck games, sit or drop early, and just take them in the legit games where skill can outweigh luck. Not to mention every dealers choice game I've played everyone got hammered except me and I could convince them to play hold em or stud every time even if it wasn't my turn, and when they're drunk theres nothing better than check check trap

Yes true poker should be fun. No doubt I love playing the game, if i didn't I wouldn't play. Winning is the most important thing to me though. Yes I do play for the money, but I also love it when I outplay people and know that i can out think them while I'm playing.

interestingly you might actually have a bigger edge in these random variants than you do in holdem because they are really just a thinker's game. like with holdem, most people know basic strategy like what constitues a good hand and pot odds; all of this stuff is in books and on forums, where basically you are digesting what other people have thought of. in these other variants of poker, almost no strategy is written on it, so most people need to solve the games for themselves, and most people either cant or dont want to. but part of the fun of these games, for me at least, is slowly figuring things out, like basic strategy (what a good starting hand would be, what hands are worth continuing on with, etc) and sometimes you randomly stumble on something great, like a specific line for a specific situation, and you find that it works awesomely. eventually you just begin raking in the dough because you just keep building on your own knowledge while the others arent even able to build their own foundation.
that whole process is why i like games like poker. its sort of like a big brain teaser for you to figure out

stevey is right your edge should be higher here, as long as you realize what is a good hand. when there are 8 wild crds straights and flushes and even full houses aren't all that good. but bad players will not fold em, you will.
I wish I could still find people willing to play chicago and draw with wilds and suchRead my musings on poker and life at Online Poker Examiner, Poker Examiner, PokerNewsBoy.com, and My Poker Blog

Thanks for the advice. I wasn't playing very many hands in these games and I was realizing exactly what you are saying; straights, flushes, and full houses many times will not win the pot.

A little strategy
Chicago
Fold on 3rd street unless you have the nut or second nut spade in the hole or 3rd or 4th with a big pair like (TsKc)Kd, or if your rolled up
with no spade potential I would fold Aces, its not worth chasing for 1/2 a pot when 4+ people are going to see 7th to catch a spade, chances are your Aces or Aces up won't cut it and like I said it's only for 1/2 the pot. Its much easier to wait for the spade and try to walk into a high hand.
If you have the nut spade I bet it immediately,
1) noone expects this
2) you have good high potential to scoop since you have at least 1 big card especially the Ace.
Follow the Queen
I hate this game and usually fold on 3rd unless I'm real strong. with the wild 3 to a straight flush is probably the best starter other than being rolled up. Think about the usually ehh board of
(
)
is real strong if you end up with a wild, I'll usually play AA and 3 to a straight flush prett aggressively
Baseball I fold to the first bet every time, total luck game
draw with 8 wilds, OMG! please get me into this game again people will be playing pairs and such look for the straight flushes.
with 2s and 3s wild a hand like
is worth calling a single bet with and drawing 2, obviously 4 to a straight flush gives you 10 outs! 10 outs to a straight flush.
here is another factor of wilds, 2s and 3s are wild in this example
you have 11 outs to the straight flush since a 2, 3, or the 6, 7, J, Q of hearts will make it.
on the other hand is only 9 outs
big difference to have that wild on the outsideLast edited by Steve Ruddock; 08-01-2005 at 05:42 PM.
