Default med. pocket pairs early on

ive been playin for a while but this is still something that im not quite sure how to handle....i kinda mix it up.

Just curious how everyone handles a situation where u get dealt medium pocket pairs like 7s or 8s...late in the tourney short handed raise is always the option for me but lets say.....early stages middle position..a few limpers.
Whats the play limp in and try to hit trips....is there even a point to try and thin the field here?

I've seen more success with just limping in, and trying to catch trips, or an open-ended straight draw. I seem to get paid off more with more people in the pot.

yea it seems that way for me too...although i guess position plays a big part as well as your stack....in late it might make sense to raise just so u dont have to act first and make a useless continuation bet into 2 overcards.

It really depends on chip stacks, antes, and the looseness and aggressiveness of the tables.

If you have a short stack or a lot of oppoents at the table have short stacks, you aren't getting good odds to limp in and hope someone else hits a hand to pay you off. If there are a lot of people under 15bb, it may be better to raise and try and isolate one player, or take the pot pre-flop.

Remember when you limp, not only do you need to hit your hand, but it had to have helped your opponent enough to get him to put in more chips.

You will also have no idea where your opponent is in the hand if you limp and get calls.

Is that flop if good for your ?

If you've already pushed, I'd say it's good. If you've limped in, I would push right now. Make the flush draws pay, and somebody would have be to holding 89 to already have you beat.

This is a question I've asked myself (midPP). The only thing I've come up with is if I'm short stacked, I push (less then 10BB) and take my chances. If i've got a decent stack (I assume we're talking NL tourney play). then I will limp in from late position, but will probably fold anything less then 1010 from early position. A lot depends on the table. If I'm in a very passive game with very few PF raises, then I'll limp to see the flop.

This may sound odd, but I tend to play these hands based on how i am trending. There are stretches where I always seem to be hitting my trips...during these stretches I tend to limp more. During stretches where I seem to be missing the trips I like to raise PF to try to take the pot down early or give me a shot at a continuation bet into one opponent.

I know the odds are always the same, but I like to play these on feel. Lately I am hitting my sets.

One other difference. I tend to raise more in tourney play and limp more in a ring game.....probably the risk factor on cash vs. a tourney stack that sways me.

If you play roulette, if the last number was red, do you play red again? I know people play by feel, but the odds never change and the cards ahve no memory. You should really stick to a set move (within reason) with these hands.

Now playing them differntly to disguise their strength or in reaction to your percieved image at the table.........
Marm is back, maybe. Been off for 3 years. Rusty as Hell.

It is fine to mix up your play, but be doing it for the right reasons.

Of course, position is important too. raising with 66 UTG is pretty suicidal.

That is basically what i am doing...mixing it up. I need to vary my play, so I let that "feel" steer me a little. Believe me, in general I play things by the book, but when you need to randomize things a little, feel is just as good a reason as any. Last night I had pocket 4's....this time I raised them because they were probably the best hand, but not likely to be that after the flop and I wanted to take the pot down pre-flop (I forget my position), I missed the flop, but made a strong continuation bet....I was called. The turn came and we both checked......caught my set on the river, made a small bet, got raised and re-raised....was a very nice pot. That agression bought me the cards I needed.......had i limped this time, I would have never made it to the river. Go figure.

You have to very your play. I have been winning very often with my mid to low pairs because for the most part.

I must say I really disagree with this. Cards may have no memory but players certainly do.
