Default I have a MTT tournament tonight and I need some insight!

Ok let me give you the specifics.

It's a $150 buy in, 22 people max two tables no limit tournament.

We usually start with 16k in chips, the blinds I think for this tournament will be 20 mins. The blinds start at 50/100, 200/400, 300/600 etc.

What tactics should I use, most of the players are pretty solid agressive, not that many passives, and some are weak though. I have learned to be patient but sometimes it slips, when the blinds are low should I start aggressive and try to accomulate as many chips as possible or stay out of trouble with these type of players. I think they view me as loose agressive.

I need a strategy as I desperately want to win this one.

Shawn......always play the exact opposite of the table. In general you want to start conservative in any MTT, especially one where there is a lot of loose money flying around.

Raise your starting hand requirements. With this crowd it seems like you can be put all in at any given moment and only want to be splashing around in pots you'd be willing to push with. Try to avoid the push since its a marginal play early in a tournament, but if you play only premium hands and face a push it should be an easy call.

As the herd thins out and the blinds go up, slowly loosen up your starting requirements and make a move or two. I wouldn't get real loose until we were down to 3 or 4 people left.

The fact that the blinds are cheap relative to your stack is a reason to play tight..not loose in the beginning.

Thanks for the advice I am literally writing down my own tips to remind myself because it always seems once I sit down to play my mind goes blank and all the stuff I know from experience and from reading goes away. Plus I am always tired on weds night from not sleeping the night before.

I hope I can win tonight.

i also agree with the previous post. take sklansky's advice. when the antes(blinds) are lower play tighter or bump up the requirements for youe starting hands and as the antes get to be larger lower your requirements. also play position. if you have a hand thats good enough to call but youve got some loose players behind you that are very likely to raise your mediocore hand then take that into consideration. when it 3 handed try to steal some blinds with soe raises but dont get carried away. good luck!

Early on, only play solid hands. I wouldnt bother putting any money in the pot with hands like KJoff, Q10, KQ, etc. Raise with pairs 88+, and solid aces. Limp with any lower pairs. If the odds and position are right, play suited aces, kings, and connectors. (This also depends on the table image and style). ONce you establish an tight and solid image, you can being position raising and stealing with marginal hands.
Once your table is 6-handed, you can really loosen up and start to make moves.

Sklansky and i both recommend the exact opposite, i think its best to loosen up the first level, and then to tighten up the next few...

what? that doesnt make sense.......
sklansky says to make your starting requirements higher when the antes low and loose them up in later higer ante situations. not the opposite way around.
that to me wouldnt make sense but if that ways workin for you...
sklansky even states in his book "theory of poker" that far too often players play too many hands in relation to the ante and far too few in relation to a high ante and with a full table in a early position with people behind you wating to raise you basically just dump to them a blind cuz the hand that your "playing loosely" with isnt strong enough to call their raise or a re-raise.

not to take sklansky out of context but he states that the language of the poker room is: the lower the ante the tighter you play the higher the ante the looser you play.

now there also can be exceptions such as always play at the opposite speed of the table but you also to take into account positive expectation.

Think outside the box, sklansky is not god

EDIT: I think he meant him and sklansky have contrasting ideas, not similiar ones, it was just a mistake in grammar

oh no dont get me wrong im not saying i only will play in which the way sklansky will play. ive read tons of books from dan harringtons to phil hellmuths to doyles and i just find that after reading and studying sklanskys style it has really improved my game. if you want to get really technical all poker is really is good judgement and reads. if you always had a good read on a player then you would virtually never lose.

for instance i was at the casino last week(i stayed till like 4 A.M.) and this chinese lady was sitting to my immediate right and she was exposing her cards to me when she would check to see what she had. well to be blunt she was really winning money and had the most chips at the table by far. but she wasnt taking my money(for the most part). it was funny cuz a guy sitting at the corner noticed that i was getting a look at her cards and he would adjust his play according to my folds and calls and raises. the lady never caught on to my peeps at her hole cards and still left on top.
