    Default Continuation bets and bluffing

I'm pretty new to Poker and I've been playing some HU SnGs. Although I think I'm better than most players at the low stakes I have a few problems. My main problem is when you flop nothing, especially when you have a poor starting hand and no/few outs. If i'm first to bet or he checks, I usually stick a bet of between 1/2 pot and pot hoping for a fold. Quite often it works and I would think this is the right thing to do. My problem is when you get people who just call anything and you know they've probably got nothing. I'm quite happy to fold if I've got nothing if they bet/raise but if I'm first or they check on the river, what should I do? I don't want to check as that's seems a weak play unless you've got a big hand and more than likely he will bet and I would fold but then I haven't lost anymore chips. The only way to win the pot though would be to stick in a reasonable bet but when you know they'll call anything what should you do? Put in a larger bet or just give them the pot? Thanks.

Hello and welcome to the forum

Gonna bother you with a few questions first.
What stakes you playing? What kind of players are you usually up against? Have you done much research into ranges?

    Anyways...
Those player really are annoying. You can't valuebet since you don't have a hand, and you can't bluff because they don't fold enough. So you have to check because everything else is -ev. Usually these types of players are braindead and I just try to keep the pot small until I have something.

If you're up against decent opponents, checking to an opponent on the river does show weakness, but it gives more weight to when you show strength. You fold 3 times then lead out, it's going to make your opponent stop and think. If he starts bluff at you on the river, start
calling him down with bluff catchers.

Remember, you don't have to win every pot!

Hi, thanks. I have been playing $11 SnGs. I would reckon the standard varies between completely clueless to people who I would say have some knowledge but aren't good players (About my standard I would think). I hadn't read much on ranges so I just looked it up and I think it will really help. I have noticed that although I seem to play better than my opponent most hands, I make too many mistakes and I have lost a few larger hands where I think I'm probably in the lead but they've ended up winning. For example, the last one I played I value bet every round with top pair (Jacks). There were 2 5s on the flop but I just guessed he probably hadn't hit trips. He then pushed on the river and I was comitted so I called and he had a 5. Should I have been more wary of this as in heads up I tend to think you should win with top pair. Having looked back at the hand, he really should only have called with Jacks, Trip 5s or a pocket pair but as mentioned you get a fair few people who'll call with anything.

Ranges are key in your further development as a player, something that will put you well above those "knowledgable but aren't good players".

Review the Jx J55 hand (What was your kicker?). How does your opponent play? How does his range develop based upon your actions? This a step-by-step process that should be done every street. Doing this will often clear up confusion you may have had over a hand.
You're likely up against made hands here, as it's a dry board there's no draws. Be specific, what kind of Jx are calling 3 streets(which are dropping out as you go), what kind of trips made it to the flop, which pocket pairs will call and how far down will they call?
