How does preflop play differ when you are six-handed as opposed to ten-handed? Should you play as if you are in late position in a 10-person table: same hand requirements and when opening, always raise? Or are there subtleties I'm missing here?

EP, play like your in MP of a fullt able unopened pot. A lot less limping, more raising, Alex plays a lot of SH Limit ring, so he'll say better than I can.
Marm is back, maybe. Been off for 3 years. Rusty as Hell.

Generally, you shouldn't be open limping in a shorthanded game. It is basically the back end of a 10 person table, but without the courtesy of 10 person orbit for the blinds, so you have to fight for them. Blind stealing/defense is a key part to shorthanded play.
I'd like to hear from alex on this...

Said it once and I'll say it again. Pick up Hold 'em Poker for Advanced Players by Sklansky and Malmuth. It's the best breakdown of SH play.
You're playing your position and table more than your cards in SH limit cash games play as you are in full NL games. You're spending more on blinds per 100 hands, so you have to take some pots. If the pots are big at the table, the quantity within the pots override the quantity of pots, so you can be tighter and be aggressive when "you got it."
Aggressive table= play tight
Tight tables= play aggressive
That goes for all poker games in full ring or SH.
