    Default More on counting/outs

Ive only been playing 6 months and find it REALLY difficult to keep track of odds or anything like that. I cant calculate anything in my head fast and I'm bad at maths! Is this a huge disadvantage?? What can I do?

Once you can count your outs, the rest is pretty easy. The odds of hitting your hand on the next card is about 2 X your number of outs. If you've got 10 outs, then you've got about a 20% chance of hitting your hand (actually more like 22% - if you've got more than 6 outs you can add 2%).

From there, you just need to convert the percentage to a ratio. If you can just remember that 10% is 10-1 against, 20% is 5-1, 33% is 3-1, etc. then you can get a pretty reasonable idea of the actual odds (i.e. 15% is right between 10 and 20, os about 7.5 to 1).

There's a good link on our home page with some good probabilities charts and with another link simply called "Links" with some good Poker Strategy sites and such and such. Browse through the whole site. It's more than "just a poker forum."

The month that article came out. Someone was bitching about the estimations on PokerPages. The one time that looked at the thread, I replied with something along the lines of:

"Shut up. If 4-5% is a deciding factor in how you play the hand, you probably shouldn't have played the hand in the first place or try looking at your cards."

Thanks for that, the probability pages are good alex. I tried to read books on these topics but just found there was so many numbers and combinations and formulas it was making me sick/dizzy. What are the most important ones to remember? Girevik you gave good advice. Is that all the basics I need to know?

That's pretty much it for pot odds, but impied odds is important too.

Implied odds include the money you are LIKELY to win on later streets if you hit your hand. Say you think your opponent has a very strong hand, but you've got a nut straight or flush draw. You can justify calling a bet somewhat larger than what straight pot odds would allow because you are likely to get more money out of your opponent on later streets. This is a much harder concept to put an actual number on, though, so is more nebulous. Generally I won't really think about implied odds ALMOST, but don't quite justify a call. Then I'll think about what he may have and how likely he is to bet again on the next street.

Killer Poker by John Vorhaus gives kind of a minimalist presentation of odds which is pretty easy to understand. I don't agree with everything in that book, especially for loose low limit games, but that particular section might be just what you're wanting.
