    Default Settle an argument?

First post on the forum. Just finished a home game with my buddy and he's pretty upset with the results. I think I made the right play. Can you guys give some input? Was I right?

We're head's up. Chip stacks very close to even. Big blind is mine. My hole cards are 8D5S. Small blind calls. I check.

    Flop comes 8S-7H-5S.

I bet 3 times the big blind (roughly 1/7 of my stack)

    He raises to 8 blinds.

I go all in. He calls.

He holds AS-6H. Up down straight draw and an over card. 11 outs.

Turn and river are garbage, my high pair holds up, and I win the game. Was my play correct?

He's pretty sore but I still say a made hand is better than a drawing hand.

    What do you say?

I'm assuming the blinds were high, but how many BB did you each have left?

Back to hand, you had what, and the flop is what? Did you have two pair and how many 5S were there in your deck? Assuming you only had pair of 8s, home game, end of the night... sure, you had as much of a right to go all in as his hand did. Personally, if playing to win I would have tried to avoid that with either hand if stacks were about even. Unless blinds were around 5%-10% of your stack.

You won so you did the right play. But overall I think the all in was very risky.

Like already mentioned , it depends on the blinds compared to the stack size. If the blinds are high there's now chance I'm getting away from this .

If the blinds were high , he played it bad , A6 should be a shove from the small

Since you stated that 3BB was "roughly 1/7th of your stack" that means you each started hand with just over (or around) 20bb. There was room for some play. There is no reason for him to be sore. Flopping a pair is about 32% i think, so heads up there was no reason to think you didnt have a good chance at being a head.

As B2B indicated, A high pf heads up is decent hand so if he didnt like you comming along with rags he should have raised pf.

Pinguaq- Very sorry. That was a typo. 8D-4S. We were only playing with one 5S But I do agree, I don't think he should have ever let me see the flop with those cards.

Before the deal we each had roughly 22 big blinds left. My buddy LOVES to chase drawing hands so I did think my top pair was ahead.

Thanks for the input guys. I've been playing for a few years but I consider myself a very novice player. I'm only now starting to really study odds and try to improve my game. I'll be on the forum with many questions in the future

No problem, I assumed it was a typo since you mentioned one pair. No biggie, we all do it. Welcome to the board and feel free to post your questions any time.

Only from people who can't see past results.

Poker is a process oriented game.

But to be Honest, with top pair, heads up, you'll probably never wrong to shove with short stacks.

the fact that you won by any ways means that you played ok. So there is that.

At any case you think a double pair on a low flop like that is a very decent hand to push allin right there on the flop. You dont want to give a turn for free cuz it will be most likely harmful to your hand.
