    Default checking on the turn

How many ppl check on the turn and for what reasons ?
I have noticed plenty of this in my own play and wondered if other ppl
    noticed anything similar ?

    Depends on the situation.

Take a free card by checking behind.
Pot control where you can't get 3 streets of value.
Cause an aggressive villain to bluff rivers when we check behind turn.
Increase the range of hands villain calls river bets with.
    Give up on a hand.
    Check-Raising.

Sure there's others that I'm not thinking of ATM.

Yes these are good reasons for doing it ... do you find that you
check on the turn more than you raise on the turn ?

That's such a vague question. You should post some hands, you will get a lot more information and knowledge out of it.

The reason I was vague is that its a general question (stratergically) , it does depend a lot on the cards , but no entirely I'm guessing ,
Maf1889 gave good tactical reasons for doing it , the 2nd part of my question was the significance of checking the turn in my own play,
and I wondered whether other people noticed a similar trend ...?
I guess another way to put it is which phase of a hand generally has more checking done ? pre-flop / flop / turn / river ...

A small example I give may not have much bearing on the questions on hand , but I was playing in a small live tourney last friday (14 players)
and I found that on the 1st table (1st round sort of , top 2 go to final table) when there was only one person to my left, a large %age of the time
I was checking the turn to them regardless of my hand or community cards , I guess I was thinking I had my opponent beat each time and was hoping
to give some "rope" to spring a re-raise ...? I don't know , as it turned out I won all those hands (checking on the turn) on that table ...
maybe this speaks more of my opponents than of my play? as it turned out I placed top on that table and went to the final table, and I had
an aggresive betting guy on my left and it seemed there was no more checking on the turn that I can remember ....I got knocked out in 4th place
after some bad thinking on my part after playing 4-handed for about 3hrs .... played too many small pairs with big betting "hoping" for trips , I call this "hope-poker" and as you can imagine it looses ..lol

I'm assuming you meant bet instead of raise.

Why I bet or check the turn depends on the villain and situation. The exact same cards and positions can easily have multiple different lines to take because of the villain. I check the river more often than the turn, for the simple fact that players are more likely to call with a drawing or losing hand on the turn. This is in my experience and with the limits I've played of fullring.

You're situation with the aggressive player to your left meant that you needed to tighten up. Small pairs aren't good if you have to overpay to see a flop. You need to be more willing to raise this player and get it in lighter and when you hit a big hand, give him some rope to hang.

This is such grt advice , since this is wot I did (last week friday) and hooked him big time (pot of around 30k , each player starting stack of 50k)
ha ha I had trip 9 with an ace kicker by the turn , I then bet 20k for them
to see the river , and after much grumbling and stares he folded ha ha ha lol , his aggresiveness was no longer readily apparent after this hand ....
