I usually play aggressively when I play hold'em. But when is it more appropriate to play defensively? I find myself a lot of times betting the turn and getting raised and not knowing when to call it down to showdown and when to release the hand. I think I am losing a lot of money when I am not calling it down. Also, which players should I almost always get the pot heads-up or possibly three way against so I can check-call them down?
I realize there are many, many variables that come into play here, but could someone give me a general idea of what I things should influence whether I call down the hand or fold? Like what strength of hands to call down with against somewhat aggressive players, when the board warrants or does not warrant it, etc. etc.

But when is it more appropriate to play defensively?
This is where you need to know your players. The problem with most Internet players is they call too much. The better players know this and often slowplay too much. Often they just call on the flop planning the turn raise. Position is important also, if they act first this gives you the option to check the turn if you think they are slowplaying.
Ask yourself:
Is this guy tight? Aggressive or passive, how often does he raise? Does he call the flop only with a big hand. Does he check top pair on the flop??
Also question your plan. Why did you bet the turn? Do you be so often that others can check thier good hand and KNOW you will bet?? Have YOU become predictable??
Aggresive is a good strategy....at the right time.......don't become too predictable. Pick your spots.

In "Searching for Bobby Fisher" LAwrence Fishburne says "Allways attack, even when you reteat, attack." Or something along those lines.
What this means that every time you bluff (or bet with a marginal hand), and get reraised, you have to fold. BUt you will steal/win quite a few pots like this too. BUt your folding (smartly) is also setting up a bigger score later. NExt time you have a powerhouse hand, dont alter your normal betting style, continue the aggression, and they wil think nothing of it.
BUt this issue is yoru frequency of over playing your hands. DO this too often and your losses will far outpace your wins. Be more selcetive in your choices of spots to pick a fight. Couple qoutes on this topic:
