What to do in that specific situation depends on a lot of information you didn't provide such as limit, their table image, your table image, other players in the pot, etc, etc. Its hard at the lower limits to know if your top pair is good or they have a real hand because often they will push both hard. Its also possible you are over valueing your hand. You might have just gotten unlucky....

Keep it simple
DO NOT CALL RAISES HEADS UP!!!!! Either re-raise or fold. This will keep you out of these situations and also force you to tighten up.Read my musings on poker and life at Online Poker Examiner, Poker Examiner, PokerNewsBoy.com, and My Poker Blog

From what I have read, you should fold AQs. Maybe not always, but most of the poker trackers sheet I saw, AQ was not a big winner.

AQs is a good hand, it is strong heads up and also does well in a multi-way pot. If you're losing money with this hand you are grossly misplaying it.
AQs is a top 10 hand. If someone open-raises from middle position I'm usually re-raising unless they are a rock. If someone open-raises from early position it is a lot more player dependent.
chances someone has AA, KK, QQ, AK when you have AQ 4.5 to 1. no other hands should worry you.
If you re-raise you have position and if the other player has say Jacks or lower for a pair you can now win with an Ace or Queen, and probably be able to bluff on a King since you showed strength pre-flop and someone with Jacks or Tens would probably check a King high flop.
If the player caps you now know you need to REALLY hit the flop to be ahead and this will save you from calling down a Queen high flop when your opponent has KK or AA, those 2 small bets preflop will save you 2-3X that money post flop.
Raise for position and information, whether you are ahead or behind it is a win win situationRead my musings on poker and life at Online Poker Examiner, Poker Examiner, PokerNewsBoy.com, and My Poker Blog

No, it is the ( AA to 22, then AKs, AK, ) 16th hand IMO.

Hand rankings are not about heads up outcomes. how many times that you have 22 and I have AQ will you call flops of 9TJ, TT5, 56K. I have nothing, you are ahead, but I would win every time thanks to my position. No, it is the ( AA to 22, then AKs, AK, ) 16th hand IMO.
I might even prefer some suited connector on the button.
22 might beat AQ in a computer sim but in real life AQs is a top 10 hand where 22 is somewhere in the 30-40 range.
22 hardly ever inproves 8 to 1 to hit a 2.
AQs will hit an improving flop, a pair (a high pair) or better or flush draw 40% of the time.Read my musings on poker and life at Online Poker Examiner, Poker Examiner, PokerNewsBoy.com, and My Poker Blog

Nope... we are talking about limit here. Definately a top 10.

If the game is really loose, suited connectors are pretty powerfull, but in casual conditions, forget about them.
AQ is a hand that can allow you to be in the driver's seat on all streets. If you feel your not, get out of the car. Suited connectors or low pocket are much more conditions dependable...
