    Default Leak

OK, I've spotted a massive leak in my game: medium pairs.

Here's the scenario. I get, say, 77 in mp. I call / raise. I get one or two callers, but end up in early position.

Flop brings one or two overcards, so I cbet or check. I either get called or bet (respectively), end end up going to the turn.

Turn brings another overcard, and I always fail. Always.

So what the hell do I do with 44 - 99? See a cheap flop? Bet heavy pf? What about postflop? HELP!

What are you playing? How many players? And, of course, your question is position/player dependent...but I have some thoughts.

I change my strategy with mid pairs all the time. It all really depends on the type of game I'm in.

Most times if I'm in early or mid position I prefer to limp in and try to flop a set. If the board comes dry I might take a stab at the flop. If not, I'm check/folding to all solid players.

If I get a mid pair from position I will typically make a 4x BB raise. If there are 2+ limpers I'll likely just limp along with them though.

Even as I type this I'm thinking of my recent mid pairs and how I did different things than I wrote here. It's all so game dependant. Your current table image has so much to do with it as well. If you've only shown down premium hands from raises, you might be able to get away with a little more action with your mid pairs. Also, if you've got table control you may want to play them a little more fast and aggressive.

More often than not though I would suggest limping. Nearly every case where I have raised pre-flop with mid pair and flopped a set I've had a hard time getting paid. You've already represented strength and you need to get crafty or have the perfect flop to get value past that point.

I think the problem is when I'm in early position and miss the flop, esp. when there's overcards.
This is both full ring and 6max, ring games.

What's wrong with c/f boards with two overs?

Well, I find that if I've raised p/f but then check the flop then the other player will always make an overbet.

I think in early position I'll just limp in and c/f the flop.

You can balance your range to discourage this. C/R the flop periodically with your strong hands instead of leading out. Don't like limping, but at your stakes they will probably let you get away with it.
