I used to have general chit-chat in the chatbox in online games, but the problem is it would go one of three ways:
1) Everyone would start getting REALLY chatty and you lose concentration because you're trying to keep up with a conversation as well as a poker game
2) One weirdo latches onto the fact that you are talking and starts talking incessantly to you, and even starts stalking you when you move rooms
3) One guy gets REALLY abusive when you take a pot off them, and spends the next half hour hurling abuse in broken text at you, which is a bit off-putting
The only advantage is setting up (3) to get the guy massively on tilt, and then turn the chatbox off
