Default When to defend your blind

My latest column is on blind defense for cash games

There are two schools of thought on defending your blind:

    1. Defend your blind liberally. I call this the machine gun approach.
    2. Only defend your blind with quality hands. I call this the sniper approach

polarizing the question like this is silly, versus any given opener the answer is obviously going to be in between "machine gun" and "sniper." bulletpointing the pros and cons of two extreme positions is way less helpful than actually throwing out some figures.

vs a 21/17 TAG who is mediocre/good postflop i will defend my BB from a button open with any pp, any suited ace, any offsuit AT or better, all suited broadways, a few offsuit broadways, and a smattering of other suited connectors and 1-gappers. plugged that range into pokerstove and it's around 23% of hands, which seems pretty reasonable

also your article makes no mention of the differences between SB and BB defense. (BB defense% should be a little higher and can incorporate more flatcalling than SB defense)

edit: i'm talking about NLHE btw, no idea if that's what your article is about or not, as you never mention. i'm not much of a lhe player, but i'm pretty sure BB defense vs. an LP open is supposed to be way way way higher than nlhe.

You realize that if I wrote something like that maybe 10% of people reading my column would know what I was talking about!

yea i do realize that but i was bored and trying to put off writing this dumb paper for a class so i figured i'd give my own explanation of blind defense that might be more relevant to the people reading this thread.
