There are 10 people at the table, I'm short stack, and the blinds are gonna take out a huge chunk of my stack in the next couple hands. At this point I'm thinking to myself "I need some good cards right now, AA would be nice" and then it comes:

I'm first position.
I got 4000 left, BB is 500. I raised to 1000. Leaving 3000 left.
Only 2 players call. One is a tight experienced player (male), and the other is a brand new player, needing help the whole game, and calls everything, (female)
The flop comes out:

After counting my stack a couple times, I announce that Im all in.
He folds, she calls and flips over

And then she asks, "Did I win?"
comments?? Is this a bad beat, or am I an idiot?

"Be careful what you wish for, or you just might get it."
Rough break. Don't know your position at the table, but I would have been inclined to just push all-in being that short stacked. This hand actually gives a good illustration of why.
Change the A9 the lady had to an A9 offsuit with just the ace in hearts. If the callers were the two blinds, then there's 3,000 in the pot and you've got 3,000 in front of you. You now have no protection for your hand...you can go all in at this point and anyone with a lone heart has odds to chase after you. If ther callers were players other than the blinds, then there's even more money in the pot and they're getting better odds to chase along.
Being the short stack you'd obviously like to play this for more than just the blinds, but the reality is that when you look down and see AA, you probably know that you're playing this hand for all your chips regardless of the flop, so push it all in to maximize the protection you can give to your hand. Depending on the makeup of the table and how active its been, the all-in might even look like an act of desperation and get you the callers you want anyhow.

I would say a few things. First, I would not describe this as a bad beat. The lady called twice the blinds with A9s which seems reasonable and then she called a 3000 bet with the nut flush. As a matter of fact, I'm sure most people would have put you all in if they had a nut flush there and were betting first. However, that would have been your opportunity to lay down rockets, not an easy thing to do.
In retrospect, I suppose the best way to play that would have been to go all in right away. You hope for a caller but if everybody folds, at least you stole the blinds. That't way I would have played it.

you make min raises because you want action, you got it.

8 bb's, UTG, and the blinds are good hit you next hand. An all-ion push here looks like a desperation move (and it kind of is). You really dont want callers, you want ONE caller to double you up. Yes the pot equity goes of AA goes up with each caller, but so does your chance of elimination. Even if you just win the blinds, thats a good thing. Especially if you KNOW you got a PF calling station at your table, then you can almost gurantee action. To her, Axs is a gold mine, and she will not fold this. Pushing allin is the best move.
Meh, You were only a 8-1 favorite PF anyways, you were destined to lose to players like this. Just Karma.Marm is back, maybe. Been off for 3 years. Rusty as Hell.

EAsy fold here.
JK
It is a pretty tough position for you here considering you cant really make a "solid" move to push out "junk" hands without pot commiting yourself or going all in.
You could bet 2,000 and push the flop no matter what but that is giving them good odds to call.
You could min raise and give people to call with weak hands and catch
You could go all in and just take the blinds with the chance of doubling up.
Pick your poison

Looks like a tournament...???
In a ring game I would have played it exactly as you did...
Tourney...
I probably would have pushed all in pre-flop... looks like a do or die move so you may have 1 caller. Plus, you protect your AA prety well and may end up with 750 chips... not that bad.
If I decided to just small raise pre-flop, I probably would have played it smouth after seeing that flop, considering your life was on the line and your small raise could have brought a suited connectors or suited aces in the pot.Last edited by KINGJACK; 03-22-2005 at 06:02 AM.
