I've heard it said on many TV poker shows that it's best to wait until it is your turn to act before looking at your cards. Why is this? Is it because you may give away information/tells while others are acting if you were to look at your cards as soon as you get them? Also, maybe by waiting you can look at others as they act to maybe pick up some information?

If you give off tells though it can be better to look at them just before its your turn, so the whole table isn't staring at you waiting for you to act as you double check that you have AA and smile.

yeah, this sounds like a pretty bad reason to slow the game down. just look at them once right when you get them, then set them down and dont touch them until it's your turn to act.

when you wait they have to act before you without any tells on you. So say you look at your cards right when you get them and a savy poker player is looking at you and has picked up on a tell that your really strong, well he looks down at AJ and now just calls or folds, where if you hadn't looked at your holecards and waited your turn, he looks down at AJ and raises because he wasn't able to get the tell off you. Even if you do give off tells when your looking and you wait untill it comes your turn and you look at your cards still giving off the same tell, hes already comitted more of his stack to the pot because he didn't have that initial read.
stop worrying so much and just let go.
