Default Mid to Late in tournament play.

Hey guys,

Ever since ive started playing tournament poker ive been able to get off to quick starts alot of the time. But in the middle to late stages of a tournament i seem to fall apart and my stack dwindles down to nothing.

I think this is due to the part i play alot of hands, hands that maybe i shouldnt even bother play. My question is, in the middle to late stages of a tournament, and say you have an above average stack, shoudl you play aggressively and play alot of pots or should you lay back and let the short stacks go at it? What should your strategy be?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks a lot,

Kevin

If I read your post correctly, you are talking about when a tournament is near the bubble?

Depending on how the rest of your table is playing, you should generally be more aggresive, looking to pick up the blinds/antes OR pots cheaply. You really don't want to get into a big pot w/o having a big hand and having it connect with the flop.

This is the best time to build your stack. Obviously, if the rest of your table is playing very aggresively you will need to tighten up and pick your spots. You will be playing long ball poker, looking to win a few big pots.

Best to post HH's, since tournament strategy is rather complex.

MTd's advice is as good as it gets for a general advice.

Also note, I only know the general/theoretical approach to tournaments. I am mostly a cash game player, who is moving into tournaments.

The best poster to read their HH/thoughts from is The Alex, the best tournament (if not overall) player on this board.

Play aggressively from later positions, you should be able to take down the blinds a lot .

Someone once gave me some great MTT advice.

Basically, in online mtts, you are going to be gambling all in at some point. you would rather do it with a big stack, than dwindle down and HOPE to get a hand before you run out of chips.
