    Default Stud Hi / Lo

What are the starting hands we're looking for when deep?

I placed 4th in a Horse tourney yesterday, so I'm motivated to learn more esp about Stud. I thought 3 low cards would be alright, but I kept catching high cards and was spewing chips every time using that strategy, gunning for the low. Maybe just ul?

Interestingly enough Fish, I decided to try and learn this game yesterday also.
This means my thoughts may not be so great but I'll try to start a discussion.

Best hands are obviously those with potential in both directions:

Axx of 1 suit when that suit is very live and where xx are both as low as possible is a monster hand.

A hand like 345 where no 2s or 6s are in the upcards is also very playable.

The type of hands you are probably overplaying are:

3 unsuited random low cards with little high potential such as 237
Low pairs with another low card such as 445
Stud Hi hands such as AKJ with 2 of 1 suit

To play any of these type of hands you need to probably be extremely live and in a good steal spot.

I also get the impression that you have to be able to let a hand go far more readily than in Hold Em.

E.g. You start with A24 diamonds and your 2 opponents are showing the A spades and the 4 clubs. If you catch a black Q and they catch an Ace and the 5 of clubs you should just toss your hand. Hold Em players generally are more inclined to peel off another card here.

Is this hand even good in Stud Hi? I have the impression only pairs are good, since all sorts of drawing hands require me to hit a runner runner. Unless AKJ is suited I don't even think I'd play it in Stud Hi.

I struggle in split pot games two at the end of a tourney. I have made 3-4 O8b final tables but havent finished better than 3rd.

There is a tournament book out from Full Tilt that has some S8b advice but I havent read it yet.

For stud hi/low you only really want to be playing hands with two way potential, so KKx becomes a really terrible hand. AA 2-6 becomes a big hand, as do the low straight draws and suited aces. As for hands like AKJ, unless the antes are getting ridiculous, never play this. As Wota said, be ready to fold your low draw on 4th street if you catch a brick.

Please critisize my play here. I'm sure it's bad.

I don't like the check on the river. What are you afraid of?

OK, a hand that is really good for Stud is good or at least decent in hi/lo (for the hi hand). It's not AS good, of course, because you will win less with it, on average. Granted, if someone's on a lo draw and misses it, you get more if someone is betting.

Anyway, the point is that three of a kind is still a good starter hand. The real disadvantage of it is that with three of a kind A's through 8's, you must catch all lo cards from then on with no pairs to have a chance at the lo pot. with 9's through K's, your chances are non-existant.

Another thing I'd like to point out is that I will almost never play a starting hand with a 9 or 10 in it, and will very rarely go with a J in my hand.

I agree that a good hand for hi/lo would be a low straight draw/flush draw, or Aces and a low.

Anyway, I'd also like to say that, for some reason, people don't seem to go for the lo hand in the very low limit games. They seem to be a lot rarer than in the higher limits. Don't know why, they just are.

Ok, I seem to be getting better. Thx for all the tips. CL in Stud HiLo tourney now.

I play now only low quality hands that can make a straight or flush too. That seems to work great.
