Default The Calling Bluff

You know the kind of bluff I'm talking about? Where you don't really have anything yourself but you do have position on your opponent and you suspect he is weak. So you call his possible C-bet on the flop to see what he does on the turn. If he checks, you bet. If he bets, you fold.

Is this a weapon you include in your arsenal? If so, how often do you use it? What kind of opponent do you want to use it against? What kind of a read should you have on him?

I rarely intend to do this, I may grab the opportunity to use it tho, for example...

I have AcKc, board has 2 clubs, all rags and he bets a small amount. I call and the turn is a blank and he checks it. At this point I'll give it a go, I know I have a chance to make a hand and with a decent sized raise and him seemingly weak I may take it right now!

I wouldn't start calling bets with J3o or anything in the hope of getting people in this way tho.

I'm finding it to be quite successful. Usually if I suspect my opponent is weak then I will raise him to find out. I find this way to be a cheaper method of obtaining the exact same information.

I just cant figure out what is the best opponent to be using it against. Obviously one who I suspect to be C-betting often but other than that....?

I guess the type of player to use it against is one that is aggressive postflop. Someone who always (or nearly always) c-bets.

I find I get caught out a few times by this when I continuation bet. Is there anything you can do to avoid being the victim of this?

yes, but against strong agressive players this is not the move to do. lots of players will check TPTK and simmilar hands to you on the turn just to control the size of the pot. they will probably call your turn bet, and check/block the river. its very hard to know where you are against these players because they will also 3 barrel bluff.

just be carefull.

good alternative strategy would be to raise the flop and see if you get checked to on the turn (which you almost always will) then either take a free card or take a stab at the pot

If you're playing aggressive players you need to mix up your play with smooth calls and raisies when you have something and nothing. Otherwise they are going to read the tits off you.

More often than not, if I think someone is C betting me I raise him up. Calling gives me no info. There is so much to this though, most of it is texture of the flop and how you've been playing. If the flop doenst match your play for a reraise the aggressive player is going to shit on you.

More often than not (like 65-35) aggressive players are good reading players. They have to be in order to play that style. You have to make sure what you're selling is what's behind you on the shelf. I ususally sniff weakness not because I'm that great, but because the betting just doesnt add up to what I've seen.

The best players can read well and sell even better.

Against aggressive players, it's the worst play in the world. I live on people doing this because I rarely don't fire the second bullet. If you have him on a bluff, call the flop and raise the turn. If you're not willing to raise the turn, fold on the flop and stop wasting your money.
