I know we've talked about hourly rate and getting knocked out early in a tournament .. etc etc ...
But at what point does it become viable for settling for a prize in an online tourney.
This is not like a live tourney ...
You can decide to fold every hand as a short stack whilst getting into the prizes and most of the time doubling your stake. At the same time go and play another tourney anyway.

I don't settle for the prize until I'm out.

I may tighten up vs raises, but I still will play the great hands.

Surely you are sacrificing bank roll here.

What percentage of the time do you bust out just outside the prizes?
How deep do you have to go into the prizes to cover the times you bust in the bubble?
I'm not saying shut up shop if you are chip leader, but if the odds are against you making it deep into the prizes then it must be profitable to hit a prize.

I have 2 monitors, so I'm playing cash games at some level while I''m playing tournies. I've never clicked "away" and left to sneak into the money. I can't think of the last time I fell out on the bubble for no money. In a 1k+ field, I'd say that I average finishing in the 50's-70's. That's off the top of my head. I couldn't tell you how many times I've been down to the felt on the bubble and gone a run to build my stack and make the final 2 or 3 tables.
Maybe it's an ego thing, but I refuse to click away and sit out. If I'm bored , runnin' badly, and down to 7 or 8bbs, and not playing at my best and can't pull it together, I'll go kamikaze. If anything'll get me in the mood, it's a run. If I lose, I really didn't care anymore anyway.
I'm a FIRM believer that's it's better to go out with a bang than a whimper.

I'm not scared to lose money in the form of an entry fee. If you're counting every penny, nickel, dime, and dollar when you play tournaments as large as I do (I like 800+ fields or it isn't worth my time.), you're gonna get lucky and sneak into the money or dribble down to the felt. You're never gonna win.

EDIT: Crunch all the numbers you want, post them, and I won't change my outlook on this topic.
