I noticed sometimes I just dont get good enough cards to stay above the average stack.
What's your guys' strategy, do you just continue to wait or do you loosen up your game & limp into the pot with anything??

Thanks Marm, I've been doing that though since last few tourneys, especially from the button since then I'm last to act and got some money already in there in case I flop a monster. However so far those 'tricks' didn't get me too far yet

I tend to limp alot during early rounds hoping to flop a monster as per marms advice, but as your finding out sometimes you never hit that monster...
If I find myself around 1200 chips after the first few (2-3) rounds, then I switch into a ultra tight-aggressive mode, only playing premium hands for big raises. If I get called I'm usually all-in on the flop unless I completely missed and the board is scary. If my M is below 10 by 75-150+ blinds, I start to push from late position with any reasonable non-dominated hand (10J, 810, any pocket pair, etc.) to take down the blinds or get a lucky double up. The idea being I want as many chips to double if/when I do get a call.
But I play a "final table or bust" strategy for MTTs and more often than not I bust. I'm not real happy with my MTT game so this advice may be way off, but it might give you a few ideas.

I play like Fisho and it is a fairly profitable style IF luck happens to be on your side.
Like, for example I found myself, in the middle stage of a tournament, in a 3-way all-in pot with 77. I was not getting any cards and this was my best hand of the tourney so far and knew this WAS the hand I'd have to take a stand with. Yes, it was a donk gamble but a gamble I just had to take. The blinds were kind of low so I figured the guy in front of me wasn't pushing QQ+ so I was pretty confident it would be a race. He raised 6x so I figured he had two paint or mid-PP like me and I reraised all-in.
The guy that call behind me scared me just about into the grave. A raise, a re-raise, and then his call. He was an average stack so he wasn't desperate and I figured he had the monster.
The original raiser called and we flipped over our cards. 77 (me) vs. AJ (original raiser) vs. QQ (caller).
Flop comes JKK. I'm packing up and ready to load a SnG. The turn brings a 7 and I triple up with 7s full.
Propelled me into the top 10 where I stayed until I busted out in 22nd. It was a 180-man $4 on PS.BOSS

Tournament Strategy
I've been playing in a number of Online Tournaments and find I don't last as long as I would like. In a field of 12,000+ players, the best I was able to do is go out in 312 place. Is there a particular book or article that can provide some solid strategy on how to survive in tournament play and how to bet according to where you are at in a tournament?

Given your signature I presume that is a rhetorical question Pokergran?

What kind of tourney? 1 table SnGs; 2-5 table SnGs or MTTs? It makes a difference.

Its not unusual to blind down from 1500 to 1200 and then suddenly double up and find yourself 3rd in chips with 6 left."There is a good chance I gave you a very bad description of something that doesn't work."

I play the stars 180 ppl tourneys a lot, since the $1 turbos I used to play have too much of a random element.
About staying ahead of the gang, imo it's not a big advantage, especially if you're a beginner like me. I had CL often early to mid of the tournament. btw Harrington also said in his books that 1st day CL never won the WSOP.
Anyways apart from bad card runs I figured there's still quite a few things wrong with my play anyways, should've studied HoH a little more carefully...
