I am a complete newb, but would it be proper at flop, turn, or river to make a raise to try and gather some more info from the guy? Obviously he'd call so you'd know more about his hand, but it would cost you even more if you kept betting. Suppose there's a (real) small chance he'd fold to your raise.

I probably would've raised in the flop and shut down to a raise or smoothcall. Don't see how you can get away from this one.

Against Phill Ivy you stand no chances anyway.
You should raise the flop to see where you are in the hand. If he re-raise you can be sure he got you beat. If he call and then bet aggressive on the turn you can lay it down. What is this awful loose-passive table anyway ? 7 players on the flop...
