    Default Crack Hands?

Hello all. I'm new to the forums and have been reading a whole lot. Great Place!

I have been playing an a twice a month tourny since February. I hold my own pretty well, and have gotten to know the other players pretty good too. The game is at a friends house, and there are usually 20 players in most of the games.

Since February, I have gotton to know the play of most of the guys and girls there. I thought I was getting everyone figured out. Then two gams ago, one of the better players was talking at break about playing his crack hand. I had not heard this before.

I asked him what he meant, and he tells me that he always, always plays his crack hand.

I asked what it was, and he told me 7 4os. I laughed, and he said he was serious. He said that his odds of constantly playing that one hand gave him better odds of winning with that hand. He tried to reinforce his crack hand by pointing out how many times the flop come out with all low cards, while most everyone is most likely playing the top ten hands od AA, KK,... and so on. He thinks that if he hit two pair on the flop or two of his straight, he is half way there.

I blew him off as trying to get into my mind. I began to watch him play, and never once did I see him play out his "crack hand". He mucked an awful lot after the flop though, so I don't know if he had them and just didn't hit his flop.

What do you all think? Is he for real, or is he simply blowing smoke up my ass?

The whole part about odds is bullshit. Does he really play 74o, I wouldn't count on it, many decent players talk loose play tight. Does it really matter? Not really

    Hello,

If it's very cheap to do so I like 57 suited or off.

Either lose a very little or win a whole lot.

But this guy may just be trying to mess with your head.

    Hey,

Yeah I like playing 72o and 73o. In certain ideal situations vs the right opponent, what you hold doesn't really matter.

I would be very skeptical tho if he always played it. Get him to prove it to you and show his hands a few times.

    Cheers,

    Mike

Welcome to the forums. He may have been very well just making fun of you and talking all this BS. If not, I don't think he is a very strong player. He most likely calls it his 'crack' hand because he uses those two cards to cut his crack.

Small 'cute' hands are fine for limping in in late position once in a while, which is what you see Gus Hanson do a lot, but they are not long term winning hands.. they are longshot hands, but when you do make a hand, very few people will put you on it.

    Default crack hands..

One theory is that on very tight tables all-ins preflop will pick up blinds .. you then have to decide when to go all in and a fixed random hand can do this for you. .. But.. you've got odds of about 1 in ten that someone will hold KK, AA and call you (unless you've got a very tight table image).. and if anyone gets wind of this ploy or fancies a crack at you with JJ.. you've had it.. The problem is that preflop it is a volume bluff.. and these don't work long term in NL. 1] because of the rake 2] it tightens the table 3] ppl start betting AGAINST you with more careully selected hands.. it makes ppl look at you... and in poker .. you don't want ppl to start analysing your game.

More to the point. even if you limp in with 74os and 774 drops on the flop and you get aggressive (in order to make money), who is calling to call you? On tight tables ppl will put down over pairs on flops like this.. it's just not worth the risk. If you hit 74x.. and someone has an overpair and you get aggressive, they may well put you on trips.. 74 is a cra* hand because you can't make money from it..

When you say " it doesn't even matter what you're holding vs some players" Its still much, much better to be holding a medium hand than a 7-3o

Re-Anaylis: Unless he makes a call where you can't win if you're called. Then its more important to have 73o for image reasons but this is way OT.
