    Default Too greedy or unlucky?

Last six of 18 person SnG. Only saw UTG for a couple hands and nothing noticable about his play. I could have raised it up pf, on the flop, or instead of the c/r on turn. I wanted to bust UTG and win a big pot, but is slow playing the wrong move in this situation?

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t400 (6 handed) converter

    Button (t2155)
    Hero (t6745)
    BB (t4480)
    UTG (t4865)
    MP (t4168)
    CO (t4587)

Preflop: Hero is SB with , .
UTG raises to t800, 3 folds, Hero calls t600, BB calls t400.

    Flop: (t1925) , , (3 players)
Hero checks, BB checks, UTG bets t800, Hero calls t800, BB folds.

    Turn: (t3525) (2 players)
Hero checks, UTG bets t1200, Hero raises to t4000, UTG calls t2040 (All-In).

    River: (t10765) (2 players, 1 all-in)

    Final Pot: t10765

    Results in white below:
Hero has 8d 8h (three of a kind, eights).
UTG has 9s Ks (flush, king high).
Outcome: UTG wins t10005. Hero wins t760.

UTG is obviously stabbing at the pot on the flop. what are you scared of? AA? Reraise him right here rather than the turn, he might pick something up.
Nothing wrong with taking the pot down on the flop here.
The pot is 2400, he bets 1/3rd so its 3200, you need to be reraising a good 2500-3000 here. That way he's deciding for all his chips effectively on the flop where you are ahead.

Looks perfect to me. I might reraise preflop.

I like the smooth call on the flop. pretty uncoordinated board, give him a chance to bet again. you don't want to lose him on that flop

Am I the only one that thinks calling PF is marginal here?

You are just barely getting the implied odds you need. I would probably have raised or folded.

I probably would have figured him for an Ace and raised the flop.

6 handed, he's calling 600 to win 1400, maybe 1800 if BB calls, he's getting 2.5 to 1ish on the call nevermind the implied odds. I'd call that preflop. With 6 left and plenty of chips you don't want to reopen the action in case he has a big hand. You would have to raise to say 2500 which leaves you pot committed to call a re-raise.

sure, you are getting 2.5:1, but you are in the worst position and you very few flops will look good to you - especially vs a UTG raise and with no info on the BB. Also you are not last to act, 10% or the time or more the BB will push back.

Notice that I didnt say the call was bad, but it sure is not an auto-call for me.

I would like everyone to have more chips.

the play looks good to me. i would have played it the same postflop.
the pf call is very borderline tho.
UTG's stack is just large enough to play for implied odds, if his stack was larger then it would be alot better, but i think if u were given this exact same situation 7-8 times and called each time then u would just end up breaking even, losing alot of chips, or just making a few hundred chips. Assuming that u actually stack the guy for all his chips when u actually flop a set. But what are the chances that u will stack him 100% of the time? Id say its only like 30% that u will actually stack the guy when u flop a set.

Like Beavis said earlier, i think the best option here is to either raise or fold. If u raise, it has to be a all-in raise so that u can get UTG heads up. Doing the all in raise is still a dangerous play however, as it was UTG who raised, and id say 70% of the time he will call you and flip over 1010+ or AQ+.

this isn't a strictly implied odds situation. You have to look at the chance to eliminate someone here. yeah you may break even chipwise but eliminating a player with 6 left in an 18 man S&G is worth even a slight loss of chips over time.

Not to mention if you win you can just run over the table.

You guys are putting too much emphasis on the implied odds of the hand.

At this stage of the tourney you can't let people run over the blinds or you'll soon find yourself on a shortstack. I'm not folding pocket 8s, 6 handed, for a minimum raise, where 4 people get paid.

you have a nice stack, here is a good time to throw a few chips in the pot.
