    Default Is this negative?

I buy into a $100NL cash table with just $50 and have built my stack up to $180.

UTG seems solid, I haven't seen him overly involved in about 50 hands and has $400 in front of him - he raises to 4.5BB

    I am MP with AA.

I thought he must have AQ+ or 99+ at worst. I've only turned over big hands so far so any raise he's probably putting me on AA, KK or maybe AK anyway.

Why make a small raise allowing him to call and possibly bust me when hitting trips?

If he calls a $15 reraise and goes all in on a flop J 4 2, I can't fold as he could just as easily be be doing it with KK as JJ.

Therefore I raise to $50 thinking he may call with with KK or AK and if he doesn't at least I don't risk losing my money.

How would other people play here?

Also I did leave immediately since as we know scared money never wins. I am really coming round to the buying in shortstacked approach and then get a little concerned when I am making a 5BB raise with 200BB behind me since this is giving such huge implied odds to players.

id proolly raise it to 15bb. no strategy here, i just make standerd non-original plays. chances are you wont lose, so you dont have to overbet. but i like the over bet. who knows you might get a call.

why not just move all-in? Just as likely to get called as a $50 raise there

You're right Stevo. I thought that just after I made the bet. In fact all in is probably more likely to get called as it could be read as either Ak or JJ hoping for a race. Next time that's what I will do.

I don't understand the reluctance to PLAY AA - it is after all the best starting hand in Hold'em!!

PF - I certainly want to re-raise but not so much as to end it there! I would re-raise 2-3x the original raise depending on who he was.
Post flop, you have to play according to the flop but 80% of the time you're going to be ahead and will want to get some action. If you're HU with the orignal better you have position and a hidden over-pair - that's pretty powerful - I'd want to PLAY it hoping to get it all in on the flop if possible.
