The Value of Position
I'm really starting to see the value of position.
Would you have called this guys re-raise? I hadn't been playing at the table long so I didn't really have a read on the guy. After the hand he told me he had pocket 8s and said he re-raised me because my bet was weak.
PokerRoom No-Limit Hold'em, $0.25 BB (9 handed) internettexasholdem.com
MP1 ($23.85)
MP2 ($23.45)
MP3 ($16.90)
CO ($15.60)
Button ($23.30)
SB ($24.75)
Hero ($25.35)
UTG ($29.45)
UTG+1 ($17.30)
Preflop: Hero is BB with , .
1 fold, UTG+1 calls $0.25, 1 fold, MP2 calls $0.25, 2 folds, Button calls $0.25, 1 fold, Hero checks.
Flop: ($1.15) , , (4 players)
Hero bets $1, UTG+1 calls $1, MP2 folds, Button bets $5, Hero folds, UTG+1 folds.
Final Pot: $8.15
Results in white below:
No showdown. Button wins $8.15.

They guy's an idiot if he said your bet was weak - you bet the pot. He just saw $1 and thought "that's not much".
Were you worried about being out kicked? Otherwise, the only hand I'd really be worried about is JQ. AT or AK proabably would have raised before the flop.
At any rate, I don't think you can call. If you think you're ahead you need to raise because he's probably on a semi bluff with a straight or flush draw and you don't want to give him a free card.

That's the first thing that came to my mind, although it is a tough bet to call...the guy is still an idiot if he really did have 88.
Besides the hands Gir mentioned I'd consider KT as a possibility, alot of people will limp with that as well. That's one of the problems with Ax though, even if you pair your aces you can be outkicked.
I'd lead out like you did but would fold to a raise like that, I'd think the guy either isn't afraid of someone making a pair of aces....or he's an idiot to make such a big raise with anything less than TPTK. Apparently he's the latter of the 2.

At pokerroom, this seems to be the standard. A pot sized bet will usually get called by multiple players holding anything from bottom pair, to draws, to the absolute nuts. And yes, I was afraid of being outkicked or being against 2 pair.

Now that is a scary board - cards everyone likes to play. I would have been tempted to check-raise but can not fault leading out with a pot size bet.
raising a pot size bet by 5x is not a 8-8 hand - he's lying or as others have already said an idiot!

I'm guessing he's just an idiot.
I don't know how many of you play pokerroom but you'd be surprised at the moves that people make on that site. It's like all conventional poker strategy is just thrown out the window.
Just yesterday I saw a hand where player A raises to 8BBs PF, player BB then re-raises to around 20BBs and then player C re-raises to 68BBs and is all in. Both A and B called.
Player A had Kings.
Player B had K/10 suited
Player C had Q/7 suited......and of course won the pot with his 2 pair.

My first impression was the opposite - a $1 bet looks weak because it's so large (relative to the pot), it looks like you're trying to make the others go away and not call you.
I usually make 1/2 pot-sized bets on the flop so take that with a grain of salt if you like. I also don't play at Pokerroom.
