My girlfriend's cousin is having a big poker night on Saturday for his 26th. It will be a home game, 2 tables, one £25 ($44) and one £10 ($18). It is tournament format and winner takes all from each table.
It will be a mix of people I don't know very well. Most of them play, but not much (compared to the 4-5 hours per night and entire weekends that I do), and none of them have ever read a poker book. There will also be a couple of complete novices who want to learn, and a couple of novices who are just taking part cos it's the guys birthday - whether it's poker or fancy dress or karaoke is irrelevant.
There will also be drinking, home made 'cigarettes', and other dubious substances.....
I've had a couple of home games before with a similar mix of novices/players, and it always gets out of hand. The novices raise and reraise everything, the players fold everything, everyone just gets fucked and no one knows what's going on. Then cards start turning up under people's elbows or on the floor and stuff.
Someone who has studied a bit and plays a lot should clean up right? But I find it hard and end up wishing I'd just stayed online, or gone out to a poker club!
Oh and just to make life extra difficult...my girlfriend told them all I play a lot, read a lot of books, and that I had a big tournament win last weekend. Now they all think I'm some sort of amazing poker genius......
I just wondered what you guys thought about how to approach a game like this. Every hand is going to be raised and every street bet, by people who mostly don't really know what they're doing. A lot of usual plays -limping, bluffing, check raising, etc - are just not going to work. Sure you can sit there and wait for AA or KK to bust everyone, but what if they don't come? Even if they do you're gonna have several in the pot with you and most likely get sucked out on.
Should I take it all seriously and try playing 'proper poker', or should I just get fucked and treat it as a night off from playing 'proper poker'?!
