Haven't seen a review of this (did a quick search), so I figured I'd put my 2 cents in.
My copy of Phil Gordon's DVD arrived today, so I sat down and watched it. BTW, the only place you can get it seems to be at his website:
www.expertinsight.com
I thought it was well done - and extremely entertaining. I've never seen such a great instructional DVD - for anything ever. The entire DVD is basically playing along with Phil Gordon at the final table of a major WPT type of event. The players include Chris "Jesus" Furgeson, and actors who are meant to resemble known pros and charicatures of other player types.
Before we begin, we select either "advanced" or "beginner" audio settings. Of course, having an ego, I watched it on "advanced" first. I have not yet watched it with the beginner audio track, but am planning to do it with one of the players I am teaching to play sometime soon.
During the tournament, we hear Phil's thought process on every hand. It's great to know that a great player like Phil has the same thoughts I do when running a bluff "please fold", making a raise with a strong hand "come on, call", and anything in between "Yep, definitely going to need hair replacement".
The DVD is very well produced, including that it's funny when meant to be, and dramatic when meant to be. I'm looking forward to watching it again, just as I would be a WPT broadcast.
The strategy is very good for a 100 minute DVD, and though elementary in the beginning (well, elementary for the solid tournament players who have read and understand HoH) does get into some interesting twists and turns through the 2nd half of the DVD.
My only bone of contention with it was when they were teaching on how to calculate odds to win: They teach the rule of 4 method - on the flop!!! Of course this calculates your odds to win the entire hand (rather than just on the turn), and will get some folks into trouble here if they don't realize you only do this when there are no more bets possible (an all-in situation).
All in all, I highly recommend this DVD. Even if you're a seasoned pro and know it all, the entertainment value alone is worth the cost.
