''J-10 plays well in a multi-way pot''...wtf??
I keep reading this everywhere - magazine articles, internet, books (still waiting for my delivery of the bibles everyone recommends tho, HoH 1&2..been 2 weeks now...grrr!!)
With AA or some big pair, obviously the fewer in the pot with you the better, cos there's much less chance of your aces being cracked....that makes sense...
But why would having loads of people in the pot with you make any difference to a hand like J10? How does it help? Surely it just makes it more likely that someone's gonna be in there with a better hand than yours....I mean J10 is hardly a great hand, cos it needs to connect strongly with the board if it's gonna make you any money - however many callers there are.
I would generally fold J10, unless really limping in late position...but if there's loads of people calling, should I call too, no matter what position or how much the call, just cos it will 'play better'?
I've also read things like 'AQ doesn't play well in multi pots'...eh?? Of course it doesn't! Surely it's the same for ANY hand??!?!

im not sure but i think its because to win win a pot with alot of people in it there is a good chance your going to need better than TPTK. J10 can hit the low end of a straight and make the best posible straight or it can also hit the high end of a straight. It always has this chance but a multiway pot gives it the proper odds. Im sure someone will let you know if this is way off but thats how ive always thought about it.

If you play JT well in a multiway pot it can win big.
Say you are on the button with JhTc with low blinds 10 handed.
utg min raises and gets 4 callers.
At this point the likely range of hands they have is something like AK, AQ, AJ, KQ?, Axs, 22-AA with the odd suited connector.
If you call it's easy to walk away from a flop of 56A, K82 or even T62. However a flop like Q9A, TJK or 89A played correctly can be a massive payday for relatively low risk.
AQ in the same position is likely to run into real trouble with flops like AJ3 or Qxx but draw heavy.
It's not suggesting that it will pay every time or even often, but that when it does it will pay big.

JT, especially suited JT is a powerful hand multiway. I think many would argue the most powerful.
JT always, and I mean always makes the nut straight. Also as others said if you have the goods you are very likely to get paid off as the board will surely hit someone else pretty good.
I would tend to play JTs the opposite of you. If I know it isn't going to be multiway than I dump it as it is a deceptively weak hand shorthanded as your kicker is junk and the odds that you are dominated are pretty good.
So play the hand for the straight or flush dump it if you hit a pair and get any resistance and play it fast if you hit 2 pair and watch out for straight card to bust out that holding.

Not always - almost always!
9-Q-K-T-x - nut str8 = A-J
9-Q-K-J-x - nut str8 = A-T
7-8-9-T-x - nut str8 = Q-J
7-8-9-J=x - nut str8 = Q-T
Jiffman - if you remember that all str8s must have either a 5 or a 10 in it you'll also remember that the higher the str8 the more secure it is to be the nuts. the 5 will make as many str8s (A-9) as the 10 (6-A) but many of them are on the wrong end (idiot end) where as the T(J) is seldom beat (see above).

Along with everything else that has been said with J10 if you hit a straight you automatically have the nut straight. Not sure if anyone has said this yet just thought i would give some insight.
