Default The gambler stereo type?

I'm almost 36 years old and through my life most everyone has told me gambling is bad. I would have to agree with them but as a gambler you must wonder about those guys who do it for a living. With that said and realizing that poker is about the only gambling game one can beat legally, why don't those same people understand this? It doesn't matter that you say but Doyle Brunson, Dave Reese, David Sklansky, Barry Greenstein, etc., etc., etc. have been doing it for a living for so long yet have BS, MS and PhD's yet they make more money playing poker. Sure, they are the elite but while it's an example there are plenty of people making a decent living playing poker. I just wish people were more open minded about it assuming they knew the facts.

Question? How many of you guys are single? If married, what does your wife think about you playing online for money assuming she knows? Again, this goes back to what has been burned in our brains about gambling in general.

Thanks

I'm single so only I must live with the consequences of bad financial behavior.

im not married but i am living with my g/f-exact same amount of nonstop round the clock nagging but no tax breaks

to say she hates me playing poker is an understatement but so long as i cash out every now and again and buy her something nice then she doesnt seem to mind that much....at least for the 10 seconds that she cant wait to see what it was i bought

she was a lot worse when i started..was like being 11 again and a nagging mother in my ear all the time. now when she sees that i do make a little money at it and am not gonna blow our mortgage payments or savings at it then i guess shes mellowing a little.

however every now and again she does withhold "services" if im doing bad-no better motivational factor imo

I'm married, and my wife knows. She's actually fine with it. She doesn't like the fact that I tie up the computer so much, reading stratagy, playing, reading these forums, yada yada yada.(working on buying a third one for her [2nd is in daughters room]). As long as I'm not blowing money that's set aside for bills (which is just about all of it right now), then she's fine.

We had a discussion about it when I first started playing for play money online. She brought up the fact that I was playing constantly and reading and such. She was thinking I may have a problem. I told her it was kind of difficult to have a gambling problem if I wasn't gambling money. That quieted her and since then she actually listens to my stories even though she doesn't know what I'm saying.

As far as her withholding "services" for any reason, we had that discussion years ago when we first got married..."services" aren't a tool to reward good behaviour or to be taken away to punish bad behaviour. If it was used as such I would treat it as such...

My wife told me she was going to cut me off one time...I told her she cut me off if she didn't know where I was getting it.

One evening last week, my wife and I were getting into bed. Well, the passion starts to heat up, and she eventually says "I don't feel like it, I just want you to hold me." I said "WHAT????!!!" So she says the words that every husband on the planet dreads to hear... "You must not be in tune with my emotional needs as a woman." I am thinking "what was her first clue?" I finally realize that nothing was going to happen that night so I went to sleep.

The very next day, we went shopping at a big, unnamed dept. store... I walked around with her while she tried on three different very expensive outfits. She couldn't decide which one to take so I told her to take all three. She wanted matching shoes, I said "lets get a pair for each outfit." We went to the jewelry dept. where she gets a pair of diamond earrings. Let me tell you ... she was so excited. She must have thought I was one wave short of a shipwreck I started to think she was testing me because she asked for a tennis bracelet when she doesn't even know how to play tennis. I think I threw her for a loop when I said it was OK. She was almost sexually excited from all of this. You should have seen her face when she said "I think this is all dear, lets go to the cash register."

I could hardly contain myself when I blurted out "No honey, I don't feel like buying all of this stuff now." You should have seen her face...it went completely blank. I then said "Really honey! I just want you to HOLD this stuff for a while." And just when she had this look like she was going to kill me I added, "You must not be in tune with my financial needs as a man."

I figure that I won't be having sex again until sometime after the spring of 2008.

Old joke but a good one.

My wife sits and watches me play.

We're going on holiday on Saturday entirely paid for from Poker (as were our new back doors).

And she plays $5/1 SnGs and is in profit.

All is good

i flew out to kansas to see nomanner last week and my half of the ticket was funded by that royal flush bonus i got and what i made that night besides. i'm pretty sure he's pleased with me playing.

i've actually even won my parents over cuz i've showed them how i track my earnings and stuff and so they know that i'm making money, not losing it. they even ask how i'm doing occasionally.

I'm with Irexes on this one. My GF used to question my incessant playing until I threw some of my winnings her way. This month I'm taking her on a 7 day cruise for her bday funded by my grinding and she surely isn't complaining about that! :good:
