Decided to sign up on that buzzlife forum and reply to the thread. I made my name talstramer, tried to show that poker isn't just a dumb game of luck or a gamble.

Thanks for the love of God they couldn't understand that. They think they know more about the subject than I do which made me even more mad. Then on top of that, they kept telling me I had no chance when some of them don't even know me personally (most of them do though, as it is a forum from washington dc I used to live there and party with these people).
My main point is great poker players aren't born, they are made through severe determination, great instincts, understanding the game, understanding the players, and mostly understanding thyself.
I have these qualities to understand that and to go forward and work as hard as I need to in order to succeed in poker, will I say screw college because of it? Hell no. I am going to get my degree regardless and I even stated that but they still continued on the fact that the thread was supposed to be about school vs poker when in fact it wasn't.
It was about people making choices in life, and those of us who aren't afraid to take on a little risk in order to do something they love vs those of us who are just too afraid and always use our current situation to hold us back from doing what we love and just grind it out at a corporate job we hate everyday screw that.

Similar Boat
I'm in a similar boat. I goofed off and partied during my first stint at college now I'm 25 I have my BS and I started a job as a software engineer. I don't know if this is my calling or if my calling is playing poker, because I only started playing poker 2 years ago. I've been told by some people here in the boston area that I am an excellent tournament player, and when I sit down at a local cash game I get respect because I have earned it. The problem with poker is that you have to be able to handle the swings, and when you hit a bad run you hit a bad run, you have to be able to continue living your life the way you're used to without having to tap into your bankroll. I honestly don't know which way I'm going to go either, but lets just say I'm going to try to win a seat for the WPT this year at the woods.

If you think your the next Doyle Brunson of poker then go for it. I'm going back to school because I'm getting a free ride but plan on being on top of my game afterwards and who knows if poker will be my calling or not.

After reading all the posts i realized that this has to be one of the better sites that i have ever belonged to. Now a days you get the know it all type of people that want nothing more than to tell you your wrong. But haven't found to much of that here yet.
With that said! I have to add my 2 cents to the subject, I have been there! I spent 2 1/2 great years of my life doing nothing but playing cards and living the Vegas life. I left my family and friends behind to live the poker players dream, and i wouldn't trade that in for anything. I might not have been succeded in some peoples eys, because i had to move back to Mich after that time. But i made a living doing what i love, and made a pretty good one at that. I just got burn't out on the parting life of vegas, trying to burn the candle at both ends. I have always said weather it be in your early years or in your later years always take the time live out at least one of your dreams.
Well enough babbling on.
The number one peace of advice i could give any one trying to make the jump into poker full time is make sure you have GOOD MONEY MANAGEMENT skills. With out that you will go broke in a heart beat, no matter how good you are.///

See I believe everything happens for a reason, like my passion for poker couldn't of come at a better time. I used to party so hardcore it wasn't funny, but I limited it to the weekends only ( I used to rave a lot) I only really listen to electronic music still, but that's not the point.
The point is nowadays I am a homebody, I have gotten all that partying out of my system and have never been more focused on my life than I am right now, which just so happened to be the time I fall into poker.
So you know during my research of that life, I thought about what pitfalls would get a hold of me that often gets others, partying? Nah not now, not anymore, so thank god that wouldn't be in the equation, poor money management ? Nope I am what i call a minimalist, I only use what I need, and only aquire what I need, the basics, food, shelter, happiness, all the extras are great for the other person I don't really need them.
So I think going into this one day full time I think I'll have my bases covered. My nonchalant views and laid back character keep me from going on tilt at the tables, and I guess my philosophies in life keep me from going crazy when I win.
I think it's just up to the person if they are smart to do some soul searching when they venture into something new and if it will become a big part of their life, as well as the homework involved. If you go into poker with that kind of mindset as well as anything in life you'll do well.
